CHAPTER TWO

‘Wait here’, the receptionist said and walked into the office. I took a seat and tried to calm down. I was nervous.

This was my first big interview and I couldn’t afford to flunk it.

She came back out in a bit and smiled at me, ‘you can go in now’. I nodded and walked into the office. ‘hey, you can have a seat’.

I looked at the guy in front of me with my best attempt at a confident smile. He seemed really nice and that helped me gain confidence. I sat down.

‘Let’s start by introducing ourselves, I’m Brad McCall and you are?’, ‘Natalie Brent’ he nodded with a smile and opened the file that held my résumé. ‘I’ve gone through your résumé and I must say; it’s impressive. But that isn’t what counts here. It’s how much you can impress me’ I smiled ‘Brace yourself then.’

---                           ---                          ---                              ---

I looked at my watch, it was five pm, I was so excited and I was looking forward to seeing Channon. I had agreed to go on a date with him today….well not a date but you know...you should get the idea.

I had gotten the job and the pay is huge!, five thousand dollars a month, and I was going to be the PA to the second most important person in the company. I don’t know how that had happened but brad seemed really impressed by me.

I hadn’t been this happy since Jake.

Normally I would have worn jeans for the not-so-datish date but I wore a lovely little above the knee length gown and did my hair and put on little make up (I wasn’t much of a make-up person).

I looked at my reflection in the mirror, I had to hand it to myself, I was actually looking really nice, but I was totally shoeless.

I walked over to my shoe shelf and scanned it, there were quite a number of shoe boxes I had neither opened nor seen. I opened the first one, leopard print platforms, nope. Suede ankle boots, na-ah. Black suede shoes with Aztec bow, perfect.

It nearly seemed like it was made for the dress.

As soon as I put them on, the doorbell rang  and I slung a shoulder bag over my shoulder and got the door.as expected it was Channon.

‘Hey Chan’ I said enthusiastically with a smile. He blinked, ‘wow Nat, you look wow’, I laughed, ‘thanks’ then his eyebrows came together with a smile on his face ‘wait, you got the job right?, you look really happy’

, I laughed and nodded ‘I did! I guess I’m not so dumb after all. I think the suit played a big role in this’.

He laughed and took my hand, ‘let’s get going, the world has to see you like this’.

He drove us to the park, his car was really nice. Evenings were the best time to go to the park, the lightening was amazing.

‘Anything you want to do specifically?’ he asked. I smiled, he asked what I wanted, Jake never did that. ‘yeah, let’s eat burger and slush by the fountain, I’d like that’. He smiled and nodded and in five minutes, we were doing just that.

I felt happy, and also an inner peace, not all the way but at least it was there. We chatted for a while about memories back in college. He did a good job stalling the conversation from Jake and Noelle as much as possible.

After a  while I felt something in my shoe, it felt like a tiny card, ‘anything wrong?’ channon said looking a bit worried when he saw my expression, I smiled, it was so sweet that he cared.

I shook my head and smiled at him, ‘nah, I felt something in my shoe’, I got my leg out of the shoe and bent to get whatever was in it.

I was right. It was a card. “Happy graduations…love Jake”. Suddenly, I didn’t really think the shoe was that great anymore.

I think channon noticed the change in my countenance because he asked, ‘are you alright?’ and took the card from my hand.

He studied it and tossed it away. ‘Is this what’s making you upset?’, I sighed, ‘I was just thinking-’ ‘-don’t think. Stop thinking, at least for this night. Just do whatever you feel like. Remember don’t think about anything, not consequences, not regrets, nothing’. I smiled; it seemed like fun, ‘Deal’.

---                         ---                  ---                     ---

I was right, it was fun. I was wearing his jacket and still shivering.

I had jumped into the pool without thinking and enjoyed every minute of it. Not the minutes after though, it was really cold.

We stood outside my door, ‘Good night. This night was really fun. I need to go to bed now though; tomorrow’s my first day of work’. He smiled ‘sleep tight’.

  ---                                ----                             ---                     ---

‘Being a personal assistant isn’t so easy, but I’m sure you are up to it. It’s usually better to achieve a good healthy relationship with your boss. You handle most cases, schedules, fix dates, and attend meetings and conferences, order pizza and lunch and things like that.

I laughed, ‘I think I can handle that’, Bella was one of the companies secretaries; she was young and really nice. Then she turned to me as soon as we go to the door leading to the office, ‘good luck, you’ll need it. Your boss is well…tough, but incredibly hot.’ She winked at me, I laughed and I waved at her as she walked away.

First impression matters, make a good first impression. I thought as I pulled the door open, there was a rather really good looking guy in the office, Bella wasn’t kidding.

‘Hi, I’m Natalie Brent’, I walked up to him and extended my hands, ‘Derek miller, but please call me Derek.’ He took my hands. He seemed nice enough. I think I could establish a good boss-PA relationship with him.

‘I think you should start by tidying up the table, the boss doesn’t like it scattered' I smiled and nodded and proceeded to the table when his words sank in, ‘wait, you said the boss, that means you’re not-’ I was cut short by the sudden yanking open of the door, ‘Derek where-’the guy I assumed to be the real boss stopped when he saw me. And so did my heart.

I blinked, and dug my nails into my palms to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. Sure enough I wasn’t. okay maybe he wasn’t the boss, ‘oh  Natalie, this is your boss, Mr. carter, Mr. carter, your new PA, Natalie’. Oh no!.

Natalie calm down. You are probably seeing things, maybe it’s not the same person. I thought to myself. ‘Aggressive?’ the idiot said with a smirk on his  face.

Tough luck.

This couldn’t be.

My boss can’t be…stalker.
