A/N: The picture above is Kat played by Phoebe Tonkin

"Promises can be broken just as fast as they were made."
Kat was lying on her prison bunk, staring at the dull grey ceiling, like she had been for the past eleven months, three weeks, and eight hours. Lost in deep thought, she remembered the time the cell bars had first locked behind her, three days after she had turned fifteen. In spite of her painful past and wrong decisions, Kat was adamant to make things better after her release in a week.

The clanking of keys and heavy footsteps coming from outside her cell, engaged her full attention. A prison guard introduced Kat to her new cellmate, Noah, who had been sentenced for nine years. Kat didn't like the thought of a new cellmate. It had always just been her. Alone. She liked it better that way. It meant she didn't have to repeat her story to a stranger and for feelings to be resurfaced. However, when Kat saw Noah's face, she felt an instant bond. Her clenched fists loosened and she let out a soft breath she didn't know she was holding. The repressed memories, of her sister, Kasey's, death, resurfaced to Kat's conscious mind. Kasey was only ten when the tragic car accident had taken her life 4 years ago. At once, Kat could see the resemblance between Noah and her sister. Noah's eyes had an innocent stare, just the way Kasey's did when she was alone in the dark.

A still silence that hovered around them, made her blood as cold as the air that crept through the tiny barred window in the corner of the grey wall. After a long wait, Noah broke the quiet, with her soft husky voice, that simply said, "Hey."

A/N: That's the end of the first chapter...so what do you think about Kat? Comment your guesses as to what you think got her behind bars :)
