I sighed walking towards my camp, reels of fish in one hand, and a bucket of clean water in the other. After placing what i needed on a clean mat, i begin to prepare for dinner, hearing the trees shifting in the background. Smiling as i feel a small tug on my jeans, i stop descaling one of the fish, and look down at a little orangutan.
“ hi milo,” i coo and pick him up in my arms as he cuddles his head against my neck.
“ where is haze?” i ask him as his gray blue eyes met mine, and he points up towards the west of the river.
“ is he still hunting?” i asked again and he nods slowly.
BANG!!
I jump from the sound of the gunfire, milo slowly climbing to where he was now on my back, shaking and whimpering with fear. My instincts kick in and i am running over to where the shot was heard, heart pounding each second with fear for my son, hoping and praying he is alive. It didn’t take long for me to see haze, protectively growling at a human who held a gun, with two apes behind him.
‘ oh no,’ i thought as i recognized the human and groaned.
“ stay, hey! Over here!” he calls over more humans, and i quickly stand beside haze, glaring at the man.
“ i shot him, i shot him.”
Milo held onto me with fear as i glared at the humans, the people i thought i could trust, until we heard random gibbers and hoots.
We all turn to a group of apes, as they were hooting and snarling at us, angry that we were in their territory. An ape jumps in front of us, he was about a teen in ape years, having a bitten ear. He started hooting angrily, until we saw the leader appear, attempting to calm the horde of males.
The ape next to me ran to an injured ape as he was wailing while rapidly signing, ‘they shot ash! Shot my son!’
‘ rocket wait,’ the leader signs back as he turns to the group.
The human leader i knew, malcolm who was staring at me turns to the ape leader, “ we don’t mean any harm!”
“ they’re apes man,” says carver and i glare at him, “ do you think they can understand you?”
“ do look like just apes to you?” malcolm asks as he still stares at the leader, before looking at me.
“ put your guns down,” he tells his men and they were not very happy but complied to his order.
The leader growls gritting his teeth, “go!” he shouts angrily.
“ holy shit,” i hear them as the leader jumps before them, and they slowly back away until a boy, alexander drops something.
Haze held his arm in front of me, as the humans leave the apes, as an orangutan picks up the boys bag looking at the leader.
“ Koba!” he shouts and a scarred bonobo jumps by his side, “ follow!”
The bonobo nods as him and two other apes jump up into the trees, my attention going back to the leader, who was panting softly. He then turns to me and my sons, green eyes meeting my own, as if he was trying to read my soul.
Haze was still in front of me, slightly glaring at the leader, as he was coming closer to us.
‘ well crap,’ i thought with small bits of fear.
