I was so surprised I closed the door in her face. Two calm knocks followed and I opened the door again. Jaclyn walked in this time without saying anything. She looked for a long time at Sam and Dean, then at me for an even longer time.
"I don't exactly know what happened to me, but I think you do," she said carefully.
"How did you find us?" Sam asked.
"I remember you from the warehouse. I knew where to find you because I was following when you first came to East Creek. You stopped here." She paused. "But then again, that wasn't really me, was it?"
Sam said sincerely, "I'm sorry."
Jaclyn took a shaky breath. "I had all night in the hospital to think about this. I have an idea, but I need to know I'm not crazy. What happened to me?"
Sam, Dean, and I all exchanged looks. "Jaclyn, you were possessed by a demon," I confessed carefully.
Jaclyn furrowed her eyebrows and nodded slowly. "I thought so. And Alex, he was too?"
Sam sighed. "Yes."
"The demon, when she was thinking, I could hear it sometimes. Your name is Ryder?" she suddenly asked me. I thought it was a bit random, but I nodded. "The demon thought about you and your mother often. Your mother must have some information the demons want. They wanted to use you to bring your mother out of hiding and for... something else; I couldn't make it out."
She looked at each of us in turn. "They won't stop. Next time there will be more." She stood there a moment, making sure we had understood. Then she abruptly went to the door. At the threshold of the open door she paused and said, "The last thing I heard, the demon, she thought, 'There are ways to draw her out." Before, she had been loking down, now she held eyes with me. "She was talking about you." Her voice was steely and decisive.
With that said, she turned and walked out.
I watched the door close in disbelief. All I could think of was what Jaclyn had said. If the demons thought they were going to use me to draw out my mother, they were wrong. Because if she cared enough about me to give herself up to save me, she never would have left me in the first place.

The next day, Sam, Dean, and I were all standing outside the school at night, watchng streams of people flow out of the stands, having just finished watching the football game. I saw Opal with a group of girls, laughing and all wearing clothes that were just a little to tight for my taste. When Opal saw us the smile melted off her face and she immediately stopped laughing. I saw her call something to her friends as she dashed over to us. "What happened the other day? I was worried sick!" she demanded accusingly.
Once again, Dean, Sam, and I exchange looks. Sam took a deep breath. "Opal, that energy you've been sensing? The reason why it was so strong, so dark... That energy was a demon, Opal."
That day must have left her seriously traumatized, because she laughed. When we didn't join in, she stopped, her eyes wide. "Oh my god, you aren't joking. Oh my god." Her breath came heavy and fast.
Dean said, "Hey, Opal, calm down."
"We um, had an incident the other day with the demon," I said, careful to keep the details to a minumum. I didn't know how many details Opal would be able to handle at the moment with her hysteria. "It... got away. Anyway, we need to know if this demon is still in town."
Opal took a shaky breath. "Okay," she said as she exhaled. She closed her eyes and tilted her head a bit to the side.
Her eyes scrunched up and she looked like she was concentrating very hard. "I can stil sense it, but it's very faint. It's... in another state maybe? Yes, a nearby state... to the..." She paused for a long time, straining. She opened her eyes slowly, and they looked a bit blurry and unfocused, like after waking up from a dream. "East," she concluded carefully.
