LUKA'S POV:
She was out cold the entire ride home. After I picked her up off the ground and removed the tape from her body, I'd laid her gently into the passenger seat of the truck, trying hard not to disturb her. She needed rest.
I couldn't stop thinking about what happened... That man turned to crystal and shattered like glass. She did that. I moved my hand down to the stab wound in my side, still fresh. She did that to protect me, when I should have been the one protecting her.
I was angry with myself. I should have never let that happen. My surprise for her felt so insignificant now that I wish I had never disappeared off to that shop. I should have never left her alone. All I wanted was to give her some space and show her I trusted her not to run.
Now parked in the driveway, I took the opportunity to pull the little blue box from my pocket. I traced my fingers over the silver letters, feeling stupid for going back for this. This little box almost cost me my mate; almost cost her life.
I tucked it away for another time. Right now, this was just a reminder just how close these faceless enemies are.
Swooping around to the other side, I was careful picking her up, still not wanting to wake her. With my spare hand, I grabbed the plastic bag of clothes I had managed to save.
From my peripheral vision, I saw my third in command beta hurrying over to meet me. I closed the door, cradling Aura in my arms.
Before he said a word, I stopped him, his mouth wide open with the information he was forming to say.
"Shut up." My tone was just above a whisper, but full of authority. It was the kind of tone that stated, 'I've had a shit day don't start with me'.
He closed his mouth immediately.
"Alpha? What happened?" He was clearly concerned by the considerable amount of blood dried on my mate and I.
"I'll explain later. Right now, If you Wake my mate, I will rip your throat out so choose the value of this conversation now." I may have been a bit harsh to take my remaining anger out on him, but he knew I would never actually threaten him.
He got the gist of it. Greyer Nodded his head and turned to open the door for me. I nodded curtly back at him to show my appreciation.
I'm not a nice man; I'd never had a soft spot before the little wolf came into my life. I feel like part of me is changing because of her. What was once desolate and cold is somehow warming just by her presence. I'd never considered myself capable of heartfelt love.
once I reached my bedroom, I neared the edge of the bed, hovering her above the welcoming cushions. Before laying her down onto the comfortable mass, I rested my chin on her soft silver hair and closed my eyes.
"What are you doing to me little wolf?" It was almost inaudible, not for anyone to hear but myself.
I stripped off my dirty clothes and headed to the shower. I was still covered in my victim's blood.
