chapter 15:the day everything fell apart

(dawsons POV) "ellie!"*i call up to her grabbing my things from the passenger seat*"switch!"*and with this she quickly gets out of the turret postion and into the front seat while I get up behind the mounted 50. CAL and as the humvee starts forward with a jolt i prepare myself for what may lay ahead as jets zoom overhead, a little tip of the hat from the british israeli and canadian task forces sitting just off the coast with the UN fleet waiting an order those of us on the ground know wont be issued because the government is too uptight to let anyone help*"stay frosty people"*i say over my radio as i look around and then hear news that i never thought i would*"escape plan bravo is go repeat. Escape plan bravo is go"*and with a cheerful mood about him mason floors it headed towards the cities edge as jets begin bombing the city and i take out as many of the freaks as i can as we drive trough the horde and make it to the limits by sunrise and hopping into a waiting helicopter we return to base where WHO researchers have worked out a vaccine and a cure for the disease and our lives return to normal within a few weeks and with sky leading the way the team and i head out with a lead on the shroud and we pick up steven on the way despite sky being mysteriously distrusting of him as we keep going now in two vehicles himself blayke mason and luke in the lead while myself ellie steven and the heavily scarred logan in the car behind them and when we come to a stop at convenient store for gas and some of us head in for food sky says something and i hear steven mutter "you can suck my balls" which makes me and ellie laugh a little and when everyone comes back out we load up and head out again*

(skys POV)*as we pull away from the gas station i smirk and floor the v8 truck im driving shifting gears as we pick up speed and start thinking about the comment i head steven make though i didnt make a big deal about it and as we cross state lines a couple hours later i spot the faint light of a muzzle flash to our left and then the front driver side tire blows out and i loos control of the truck and it begins to roll and im knocked out by the air bag deploying*

(dawsons POV)*as i see the lead car loose control and start rolling i hit the brakes hard and as we come to a halt ellie and logan get out first and run to the wreck as alex and his small team roll up to assist as i throw the car into park and get out, gun in hand and alex and i both postion ourselves to provide cover fire if necessary as the the others work on the wreck and free each person one at a time though luke manages to climb out on his own and then several cars pull up and as a man climbs from one of them and without warning we're surrounded*"no rest for the hunted"*i say to myself and whirl around as i hear ellie scream and see steven holding her by the hair, gun pressed against her skull*"you son of a bitch"*i growl my sights set between his eyes *"if you hurt her...youll be on the highway to hell faster then anyone here could stop me"*steven smirks slightly and a second later sky comes to and takes aim from where he is in the wreck as the Shroud himself comes walking from the circle of people around us and mason takes ai at him with alex doing the same and luke teleportes away suddenly* "you heroes...never learn a damn thing"*the shroud says, voice muffled by his thick mask as he tightens his grip around his tommy gun looking something like a mix of al Capone and rambo*"you know who im here for"*he says coldly*"where is he?""im right here you prick!"*sky shouts climbing from the wreck, a shotgun in each hand and a pissed off look on his face*"come at me"*sky says looking ready to kick some ass*"what?"*the shroud says scoffing at him*"you think this is one of those ironic hero stories where the villan comes up with some stupid plot to kill the hero in revenge for something? no. this aint that kinda story" *he looks around a moment the fabric of his tie shining a little in the sun along with his belt buckle*"of course i do want revenge, and your all gonna pay"*he nods to steven and then steven shoots her without even flinching*"NO!"*i shout before shooting him and running to her tears running down my face and i fall to my knees holding her and doing all i can to stop the bleeding of the wound in her side*"stay with me"*i say in a panic as i cry but she bleeds out in my arms and my shock turns to anger as the tears keep coming*"see, now you know what i felt when my daughter died"*the shroud says*"you werent even in the damn room to see it you coward!"*sky shouts and then opens fire looking almost as pissed off as i am though im paralyzed in shock and dont move staying on my knees covered in blood and holding my daughters body tightly and shaking as i sob uncontrollably*

(Lukes POV)*as i teleport back to the site of the wreck i land in the middle of a gunfight and know something went down while i was gone but quickly open fire and pick off guys one by one as the shroud lets loose a hail of bullets from his machine gun and retreats with alex and mason in hot pursuit while sky hip fires his pair of shotguns indiscriminately terminator style at anyone and everyone stupid enough to be in his sights and as the last shot is fired we all stand in place dead quiet expect for dawson's sobbing but none of us have the nerve to speak up about it and we walk around checking the dead and then we all moron for ellie and hang steven by dawsons request*"any last words?"*dawson asks him before his execution*"yeah"*steven says*"she was a bitch anyway"*dawson sighs*"well, you deserve this then"*he says and with that he pulls the noose tight on stevens neck and pulls him from the ground and ties the rope to the tree before walking off to bury ellie something everyone of us volunteered to do, not because we wanted to, but because we didnt want him to have to do it but he insisted he needed to so we let it go and as we walk away from the execution i begin to sing an old western song*"to the town of hour frida rode a ranger one fine day.."*i begin and sky joins in and then logan starts the next verse though we get quiet as we reach the truck as an unknown humvee pulls up and a man steps out looking like a mix of james bond jason borne and john wick with a sniper rifle slung across his back, a katana on his belt and a cowboy hat covering his eyes and he pulls the hat up a bit as he looks up the spurs on his boots clanking softly with each step*"who are you?"*sky asks reaching for his sidearm*"its a long story kid"*he says in a low rough voice *"but im a man who wants the shroud just as much as the rest of you do, for some of the same reasons"
