Between summer days and thunderstorms

My fairy light

As I follow you from a distance, all I see is your back turned towards me
You're not walking away from me, even though it sometimes feels that way
I am following you, and you are well aware of it
Maybe that's why you stopped looking back
I can't help but ask myself if you can even feel my presence
Maybe you can sense me with every step you take

But sometimes I just want to turn around and see if you would notice
But my fear of your rejection prevents me from doing so

As these thoughts run through my mind, I direct my eyes elsewhere
No need to stare at you this long, it won't make you turn around

I take my time to look around and take in all that's near
And find my distraction behind me

A lake I never saw before comes into my view, almost hidden behind bushes and trees

Its surface covered with a blanket of mist, dulling the persuasive sun above it
Allowing but a handful of warm rays to produce a marvellous play of lights

Its reflection dancing on the branches of the trees above me

Their branches stretch out far beyond my reach, towards endless blue skies

Their leaves slowly changing their beautiful green colours

To the yellow of the sun shining down on both of us

Out here in the woods, just the two of us.

It is then, during my moment of distraction, that your voice reaches me

You call my name, I can hear you in the distance

I can't bring myself to look away, drawn by the shimmering lights

Dancing like fairies on the trees above my head

It doesn't happen often that something takes my mind off of you

You're always within my view, I never let you go
But here and now your voice is distant, even when you're near

For in this moment I am the one shutting you out

I often feel like a ghost in your home, a shadow in the moonlight

As soon as the sun goes down, I disappear
But when you turn towards the light, your back will always be turned towards me
Leaving me lonely and hungry for your gaze
But now as your voice travels across the dirt roads, searching for listening ears

It's as if I am the one seeking the light, leaving you to be my shadow
In that moment I realize that you are my darkness, trying to find my light

Only to find out that my focus is anywhere but with you
Realizing what just happened, I rip away my eyes and turn around

My eyes find you, a few feet away, with an understanding smile on your face

Patiently you wait until I find my way back to your waiting arms

And with one last glance behind me I make my way to you
You hold out your hand as I come closer, waiting for me to give me yours
And as I hold out mine, you hold me close and light up my heart

I look deep into your eyes, that seem to let me in
And there I find those fairy lights, dancing just like I saw before
This is all I seek when I stare at you for hours, waiting for a sign
Waiting for you to notice me and see that I am there for you
Wanting for your touch, hoping you'll draw me closer

Without me having to reach out, search for you or beg you
This right here is what I need, for you to be with me
To, for a moment, only have eyes for me, as if I were the centre of your world

When you smile at me like this, the whole world around me fades away
And only your love exists, as my air, my blood, my lifeline
I wrap my fingers around yours and feel my love ignite

And for a moment, just a second, I think you feel the same
It is in that moment that I realize, that not only are you my darkness

But in the darkness of everything, you are my brightest light
