The bell rings, so Wilson and I leave the lab quietly. As we walk down the hall, I notice that a lot of the teachers are substitutes today.
They all happen to be the opposite genders as the normal teachers, and they look quite similar. Siblings, maybe?
We reach our classroom, a blond man sitting behind Mme Godreau's desk. Everyone in the classroom is different, too. Random girls are sitting where the boys sit, and they look like those very boys. It's the same with the random boys.
A boy is sitting in my seat. He could pass as my brother.
No one in here is someone I know, and yet I feel like I've known them forever.
I bring Wilson with me to the teacher's desk.
"Hi. Um, I'm Kennedy, and he's Wilson. We're...new students." I stammer, nervous about the whole situation.
"Weird. Mrs. Laskey never mentioned I would be getting any new students." the teacher says.
Mrs. Laskey?
"Well, welcome to Bayside. I'm Mr. Godreau. Have a seat at the back, at the standup desks." he smiles, gesturing to the far wall.
Mr. Godreau...
"I think I know what's going on here." I say quietly to Wilson when we reach the back desks. "I just need to do one more thing to confirm my suspicions."
Once class is over and it becomes Break, I head over to the kid that was sitting in my seat. He's hanging out with a short bespectacled girl and a larger boy with brown wavy hair.
"Hey! I'm Kennedy." I greet with my biggest smile.
"Oh, uh, hi. I'm Ken." the boy says. He pushes up glasses that look exactly like mine.
"And who would they be?" I ask, nodding to the other two people.
"Kaden and Kylie." Ken replies. He's confused under the smile he presents. Wondering why some random person is talking to him.
The same reaction I would have.
"Is your last name Chamberlain, by chance?" I wonder.
"As a matter of fact, it is." he says, slightly surprised.
"And they're Kaden Reinhart and Kylie LeBlanc, right?"
"Uh, yeah. That's sorta creepy..." he says with a nervous laugh.
"Oh. Well, I have to go. Nice talking to you!" I grin over my shoulder as I leave to search for Wilson. I find him by his locker, talking to a girl that is getting things from it. "Hey. Who's this?"
"I'm Willnia!" the girl beams when she turns to me. "Nice to meet you..."
"Kennedy."
"...Kennedy! You know, you look remarkably like my friend Ken." Willnia says, thinking. She must be Willnia Manzer.
"Can I steal Wilson for a moment?" I ask her.
"Sure! Talk to you later, friend!"
I lead Wilson to the stairwell. "I've figured out what's going on." I whisper.
"What is it?"
"I don't know how, but everyone here is gender-switched. All of these people are the opposite-gendered versions of their normal selves." I explain. Wilson's eyes go wide.
"Oh my God..." Wilson trails off. "You're...you're right."
"I met myself a few minutes ago. It was weird, but he's actually pretty cool. Handsome, too. He's got hair like Wesley---who, I guess, is Wendy now."
"I met someone, too. That girl Willnia is really nice. We have so much in common!" Wilson says, clasping his hands together.
"She seems cool." I comment.
The music comes on, signalling the end of Break. "Let's get to class." Wilson says.
