Mate!

What the hell?!

I stepped back shocked as my mind snapped to the now just as I heard footsteps approaching and before I could blink, the slender wolf disappeared. Something inside me felt like whining and the disappointment I felt was overwhelming. I shook the feeling off as a couple around my age came into the clearing.

"Caleb?" The guy asked and my irritation and annoyance came back tenfold. "What're you doing in the woods at this hour man?"

"I could ask you the same thing." I snapped, my voice thick with disgust.

The tall guy standing a few feet from me was not as tall (5"11), with short black hair that framed his stoned face. Markus was my best friend growing up but over the years I've pushed him away just like I did everyone else.

My eyes swept over him quickly and I took in his built physique that was clothed in denim ripped jeans and a blue striped shirt that made his chocolate eyes bright. He pulled the girl who stood besides him closer and my attention turned to Cathy, his girlfriend, who was formerly both our best friend.

"We were headed to your uncle's party." He says and I watch as his face becomes a hard mask, just as I was sure mine was.

"How've... how've you been Cay?" Cathy said, trying to break the tension.

I spared her a glance and without missing a beat my eyes took in her short frame and pettie body that was dressed in a short white dress and matching slip on boots. She was always a pretty redhead and I inwardly sighed as I had no reason to be mad at either of them.

"Good."

My answer was swift and to the point but she still smiled before I just decided to screw it and headed instead to my house, ignoring the looks of my former friends.

"I don't know why he's such a dick." Markus grumbled in the distance but my sensitive ears still heard.

"He's got a lot on his plate, just give him time."

"How would you know what's up with him? He avoids everyone and acts as though he'd beat the shit out of you if you so much as glance at him the wrong way."

"I just know okay... leave him be."

I didn't hear anymore talking and I continued walking as I pushed the conversation to the back of my mind. It didn't take me long to get back home and I sighed as I locked the door behind me before going to the fridge. I was in the mood for some steak and I rummaged through for leftovers before popping it in the microwave and grabbing a can of energy drink.

What's the point? These energy drinks only make me sleepy. I thought as I chugged the can.

My meal went off and I took the plate out, inhaling the sweet smell of my late dinner. I always enjoyed eating meat that was barely cooked just so I could taste the slight rawness of it and I groaned out loud as I was never disappointed.

Grabbing another can of energy drink, I headed to my room and turned my tv on. The discovery channel was the first on display and I smirked as a documentary on wolves in Alaska came on.

How ironic was it that I saw a wolf tonight? I mean, it wasn't a rare thing. This was country area after all and they were plenty of wildlife till down in the dense forested area but to see one this close to civilization was a surprise. And the wolf didn't even attack me, it just took off.

I rubbed at my chest as once more I felt a sadness in me at the thought of the wolf running from me.

Why would I want the wolf to come to me?

Man, I had a death wish. Most wolves were known to be wild beasts and even though none had attacked our villagers that still didn't mean they couldn't.

But still, to imagine me; a 17 year old, 6"2 brown haired, brown eyed boy, all big and tuff walking a wild beast down the street, waving to strangers as though it was my pet.

I laughed uncontrollably at the thought and yet a part of me was actually considering befriending a wolf. Maybe I could go back in the woods tomorrow night and meet it. With that thought in mind, I smiled as my eyes slowly fluttered and the last thing I saw before sleep took me were two wild wolves playing with each other deep in the forest.

<~><~><~>

It was raining heavily by the time I woke and the first thing to assault my nose was the heavy scent of the outdoors. My eyes opened slowly and I stretched before I focused on my surroundings. I was no longer lying on the comfy bed in my room but the grass of a place I was yet to recognize.

Maybe I had somehow ended up in the forest but as I looked around I saw a few wooden houses that decorated the large expanse of land. This place actually exists? Who would be crazy enough to start a community deep into the forest? Even professionals won't venture this far.

I was snapped out of my thoughts by the rustling of leaves and I automatically stuck my nose in the air as I tried to pick up the scent. The first hit me and it was a combination of saw dust and oranges and just when I identified that one the next came and it was a combination of lime trees, saw dust and earth.

My heart felt light and happy as I somehow recognized the scent and I turned my head excitedly but stopped when I saw two gigantic wolves strutting towards me. My initial thought was horror based on the size of them but as they drew closer something inside of me was practically dancing with delight.

The first and smaller of the two large wolves was slender and moved more gracefully with a completely white fur while the larger one that looked as though it stalked its prey had fur completely of gold with piercing blue eyes, almost identical to the other but this one was brighter and held more power.

I tried to hold my breath to not attract them that I was there but it was as though they smelt me. One second they were just idly passing and the next they both simultaneously sniffed the air before staring directly at me.

I wanted to feel terrified... that was my first instinct... but try as I might I couldn't get the calmness to leave me even when they started pouncing towards my direction. I stayed rooted in place before my brain kicked in when they were a mere few feet away but just as I was about to run, I tripped over myself.

Shocked that I could still be a klutz at such a time as this I looked down to see a pair of tiny paws decorated in brown fur staring back at me.

What the actual fuc-

"Caleb it's morning, school!"

I stumbled awake but couldn't catch myself as I fell off the bed, trapped in my sheet.

"Omph." I groaned but quickly found the light and untangled myself, checking frantically to ensure I was still human.

I sighed deeply and placed my head in my hands as my shoulders sagged in relief.

"Did you hear me?" Miranda asked pushing her way into my room.

"Yes." I grumbled without looking up.

"Are you okay? You didn't come to the party last night."

"I'm fine."

I waited until I heard her leave before reluctantly getting up to get ready for a school I didn't even wanna go to.
