"The letter was with your grandfather, Rich. And he said 'hidden' . Why would the letter be hidden?"
"I'm not sure. But what I was thinking of was if perhaps that is when your grandfather died."
Rose shook her head again, "No. I thought that before, but when I spoke to my mother and tried to get her to answer to something, she had said 'No they encouraged...' which would have meant, when my father died, they were both still alive."
"Did you trick her into admitting that?" Rich asked with a sly smile on his face and a frown, that said he wasn't too sure if she would play that way.
"It went straight over her head!" Rose smiled.
"Well, well, well. Rose Johnstone. You should have become an interrogation officer for a living not an architect."
Rose smiled at his playful teasing, but continued to pick up the third letter. She very carefully slid out the letter.
" ' December 19th 1953...' "
Rich stopped her, "You mean '43!"
Rose looked again at the letter again, "No. No, definitely says 1953!" She looked up at Rich as he sat there on the edge of his seat, quite literally. Her eyes widened and her mouth partially open.
"Well, come one...read it then!" he said impatiently.
Rose looked back down to the letter for only a split second then returned them to Rich, her eyes filling once again. Perhaps they should have employed someone to just read the letters to them, it would have saved a lot of worn out emotion, she thought. Jay was always looking for a new job...
"What is it?" Rich asked her. "Do you want me to read it?"
Rose hesitated, but nodded her head vigorously, and handed him the letter with her outstretched hand.
Rich cleared his throat, without needing assistance and began from the start.
" ' December 19th 1953
My darling husband...' " his eyebrows rose, but he continued to read.
"I am not completely sure why I am writing this letter, as I know I will never send it. But writing helps me.
Our son is three months old now. He is such a cheeky handsome boy.
Peter Thomas Johnstone was born September 19th at 10.07 am, after around a 12 hour labour.' "
Rich heard Rose suck in air and then place her hand over her mouth in an attempt to quiet any further noises.
" ' Jennifer and Peter are thrilled. We see them often.
And you'll never believe it, Jennifer is due any day. We have joked about it that we can never do anything by ourselves.
Jennifer was there beside me when he was brought into this world. He has your eyes, Thomas.
Even now writing this, I am smiling with tears. I always smile for you my love.
Always
Love Rose. ' "
Rose felt like such a fool again, so many tears, and for which emotion, she wasn't sure of.
"Even pregnant at the same time. They sound more like sisters than best friends. " Rich joked, but Rose didn't reply.
"Did you know when your father was born?" he asked her then.
