Link's POV
I looked up at Rhett as he continued to speak to me about his decisions. I wasn't paying full attention to him though. I felt completely numb. Like I knew life would never be the same if I continued to follow him.
"Ive decided: not here," he spoke softly.
I knew he was indicating that he didn't want to die here. I was listening again now.
"I want to recreate all of our best memories because this is the last time we will make any. Like I said in the note, let's make our final day as good as the others we've shared."
We finally found our classroom. Only Mrs Locklear was in. The children had all gone home.
"Hello Rhett, Link. Are you guys okay? Haven't seen you in a while. How've you been?"
"Not the best really. My wife and children were all killed in that plane crash a couple of years ago. But with Link's help, I'm getting by."
"Oh no! So sorry to hear that. And how about you Link?"
"My wife left me because she thought I was having an affair. She won full custody of the kids. I haven't seen them for years."
"You boys still best friends?"
"Oh yeah! Sure, sure. We live away from each other now because I couldn't face a reminder of Jessie and the boys."
"Anyway, what brings you both here today?"
"We wanted to pay you one last massive thank you. Without you, we would have never met each other. We are both genuinely so grateful for your help over the years. You helped us become better people and have given us the greatest friendship in history.""And we know that you are probably very busy, but thank you for your time today. If not for you then our day would be off to a bad start. It may have even failed. You truly are a gift. This world is very lucky to have you and your kindness Miss."
"Oh boys. You are also both truly amazing. I get the feeling that this is the last time I'll be seeing you. I waited to give you these back until now."
She handed us both an envelope. Inside was something truly special. The pictures that we coloured in on that first day that we met. I had a unicorn and Rhett had a cockatrice.
"Oh my gosh! How do you still have these?"
"You think I would just toss away the beginning of a beautiful friendship."
"Miss, we aren't just friends. We are brothers."
"See what I mean? Now you boys get yourselves back home and safe where you belong."
"Okay. Thanks so much Miss Locklear!"
That's when we moved on to memory 2. Which I've been told by Rhett is...Word count- 467
