They walk up to the house, checking that no one was around to raise suspicion. Bailey bents down and moves the flower pot on the stairs. The key shines in the light, and she picks it up. She turns the lock and pushes down the handle. Once inside she head for the stairs. The boys follow her after closing the door.
Her room, the space she lived in for two weeks before the start of term, is like it was left by the movers. She walks over to the wardrobe, sliding the door open. Quickly she goes through its content while the boys wait silently. Then she gives the room a scan.
"I don't need anything here. See if you do." She holds up her hands, and wedges past them out to the stairs.
Once the ground floor she turns to the living room. On the sideboard stands a picture frame. She picks it up. It's her, her mom, her dad. They are squished tightly together on the picture, big smiles covering their faces and crinkling their eyes. She was fifteen.
She fishes up her phone, opens the camera, and takes a picture of it. Then she puts down her phone in her pocket, and pulls the sleeve of her shirt to cover her hand. She wipes the frame clean, and carefully puts it back in place.
"Come on, boys." She calls as she reaches the hallway. There's a flash of light, and then Lance and Chase exits her room. As they exit the door Chase cleans up the hallway of dirt, and it's like they've never been there.
Madeline Wilson picked up her phone from the table where it had been left on silent while they worked. This new discovery in Scotland might turn out to be one of the greatest in the century. They were lucky that Scott's friend had sent them the news, and that they had found plane tickets. They had gotten there the morning of the third day since the beginning of the dig, and worked continuously the last three days.
She wiped the sweat of her forehead with her dirty hand and turned on her phone. One new voicemail. She pressed it, holding the phone against her ear as she grabbed a water bottle.
"Hi, mom, I hope the dig is going well. I'm not coming home. Don't look for me, don't worry about me. I'll be fine."
