The day of graduation arrives. Bailey walks up the stairs to the stage, shakes the hand of the principal, gives him a gentle smile as he hands her her diploma, and turns to the crowd. Only for a moment, and she lets her eyes sweep over them. Then she crosses the rest of the stage and walks down the steps.
When the ceremony is over, and the cars have started pulling out, Mr Higgins finds Bailey wandering campus, diploma still in hand but in ordinary clothes.
"Congratulations, Miss Wilson." He smiles at her.
"Thank you, sir." She smiles back.
"Why are you still here?" The man frowns. "Where are your parents?"
"They couldn't make it." Bailey says with regret. "But I'll take my things and take the bus home." Her smile is warm, as if the sun that rains its light over the green lawn has brought her back to life.
"Very well." Mr Higgins says, convinced. "I wish you a happy future and good prospects, Miss Wilson."
"You too, sir."
