As she watched everything flow together seamlessly the next morning to get everyone packed up, shipped out and flown off to the East Coast, she couldn’t help but marvel at the efficiency of the operation. The entire process seemed to flow so smoothly, with little to no hiccups to speak of. With five band members, three extra family members, a whole slew of crew members and one massive load of instruments aboard for the ride, it was a wonder that no one got forgotten or left behind somewhere in the mid-west during a layover.
Somewhere along the first leg of the trip she noticed that Ross was the first to fall asleep on the plane. Based on the conversation they had the night before she figured that he had gotten little to no sleep, which would explain why he was slumped over in a deep sleep at 10 o’clock in the morning. For the life of her, she couldn’t figure out how they all managed to maintain this type of lifestyle without having a total physical break down.
Ellington leaned into her, “Hey...” She felt a nudge on her arm. “Did I mention that you are the best friend ever for doing this?”
“Yes.” she replied. “But feel free to remind me how awesome I am as much as you like. I mean, I’m pretty awesome so it might take awhile.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah...” he droned jokingly. “But seriously though. I don’t know if I could have handled this without you here. The least few years have been....crazy, to say the least and I am running on fumes here, so....thanks.” his face softened as he smiled.
She wrapped her arm around his and gave a small squeeze. “Anytime.”
“Even though I did have to twist your elbow and make you scream uncle to get you to come.” he paused. “Not to mention bribing everyone else to mercilessly pester you until you agreed.”
She raised a brow, “Wait. You’re joking right?”
“Oh, come now. You know I never joke.” his words were dripping with sarcasm.
She sat up a bit, “Ellington Lee, you’d better tell me that you are joking or else you’ll be hurt so bad you’ll never be able to play your precious drums again.”
He threw his free hand up in defense “Hey! It wasn’t just me. Riker was on board, too!”
“WHAT?” her voice was getting loud enough for others to notice.
“Sh! Just don’t tell him that I told you. If he finds out he’ll go so ballistic that he may just kill me... or worse, kick me out of the band.”
She lowered her voice to a hard whisper, “What the hell were you thinking? So you put everybody up to this? Thats why everyone was bugging me so much about this whole thing?”
“It’s only because I didn’t think that you’d go for it and, well I guess I just got scared. So when I told Riker, we may have, you know... rounded up the troops so to speak. Just a bit, though!” She rolled her eyes and growled with a heavy exhale. He crinkled up his face. “Please don’t be mad. I only did it because I love you.” His face relaxed and he raised his brows comically, waiting for her response.
“Oh, don’t you go trying getting out of this with that face. Wit and charm will only get you so far in this world. Trust me, there will be payback. And let me remind you, dear friend, that she’s a bitch.”
He smiled a bit and titled his head back. “Aw, come on punkin’...”
She lowered her brows and spoke quietly, “Don’t call me that...”
“Sugar pie... Sweetums...”
“Quit it now.... I’m warning you.”
“My little dandelion.... you know you can’t stay mad at your big papa.”
