Amy Farrah Fowler sits beside Sheldon on his bed. She wants to hold him close to her but she knows he’ll get irritated again. She’d showered him with kisses and crushed him in a loving bearhug when they were reunited outside the sinkhole’s perimeter. He’d allowed it for a few seconds, especially when she’d praised his heroism, but that was his limit for human intimacy. Now he sits there eying the folds of his Flash costume.

“Sheldon, you don’t need to wear a superhero outfit to the party – you saved my besty’s life – you’re a real life super-hero,” she says with pride.

“I suppose I am, Amy…”

“You should simply go to the party as yourself. Everyone will agree with me. Those two jerks have been punished: Bernadette has taken Howard’s Xbox away and hidden it, and Raj is beside himself with cultural guilt. Indians take notice of Karma, especially when it bites them on the ass!”

“Don’t bIame them, Amy. Their jape was juvenile it’s true, perhaps I would’ve laughed with them if they’d played it on Leonard, but it proved I can cope in a crisis.”

“I always knew you could. So put that away and I’ll wear the Star Trek nurse outfit you like.”

“I appreciate the thought, Amy, but Penny has made an impressive repair on my tights with the nail polish Bernadette loaned her.”

Amy peers at the nylon – the tear is barely visible. “I guess she went through a lot to fix the damn things, she was determined to stick to her word after what you did.”

“This is why I must go as the Flash. Besides, I’d rather portray someone else tonight,” Sheldon says quietly.

“Why, Sheldon?”

“I feel uncomfortable with myself, Amy. I imagined an earthquake when the solution was not as complicated.”

“Sometimes we see things we want to see, Sheldon. An uncomplicated solution can often evade a scientist when the real answer is staring one in the face, and that is uncomfortable for any of us.”

“Hmm, uncomplicated and uncomfortable at the same time… perhaps Penny was on to something. Maybe her misnaming of the Uncertainty Principle has unwittingly uncovered a new theory and she is far more intelligent than we give her credit for.”

“Really?”

“Bazinga!” Sheldon beamed, and his funny laughing noises were contagious. He was still smiling when he and Amy left for the party in their costumes, and even let her hold his hand for exactly five minutes.
