first thing in the morning mike jumped out of bed and quickly changed into some clothes. he then ran down the stairs and into the kitchen, where his mom was reading the newspaper.

"good morning, michael." she said without looking up from her newspaper.

"morning." mike said as he got a box of cheerios and poured it into a bowl so carelessly that many cheerios landed on the ground.

"michael!" his mom exclaimed.

"sorry! i'll clean it up after." mike said as he poured the milk and quickly scooped the cereal with a spoon and shoved it in his mouth.

"clean it up now." she replied.

mike groaned as he swept up the dropped cheerios and put them in the trash.

"why are you in such a rush?" nancy asked as she walked into the kitchen.

"school."

"school doesn't start for like an hour, mike." nancy rolled her eyes.

"i wanna see someone i like. is that such a crime? i mean, you sneak out to see steve every night!" he exclaimed

"MIKE!" nancy yelled.

"nancy is this true?" karen asked.

"YOU'RE SUCH A DOUCHEBAG!" she yelled at mike.

"watch your mouth, nancy!" karen put down her newspaper.

"gotta go!" mike said as he grabbed his bag and put on his shoes and ran out the door. he hopped on his bike and rode all the way to lucas' house. he banged on the door until lucas' mom answered.

"oh, why hello, mike." she yawned.

"can i see lucas?" he asked.

"sure." she replied.

mike ran upstairs and into lucas' room. lucas was sitting on his bed writing something in a notebook, but when the door flew open he jumped and hid the paper under his bed. "knock next time."

"what were you writing about?" mike slowly walked over to his bed.

"none of your beeswax."

mike quickly dived onto lucas' bed and reached under it. his hand searched for the notebook while he struggled to keep lucas off of him. when he felt the notebook, he quickly grabbed it and ran to the other end of the room.

"mike stop!" lucas asked.

mike ignored him and flipped to the last page. there was a great drawing of a pale girl with orange hair. below was a small poem.

your eyes make the ocean look grey
your hair makes the autumn leaves look brown
and if you ever wanna hang out
i'm totally down.

"lucas what the hell" mike giggled.

"shut up." he pouted.

"is this for max?" he asked.

"yeah.... don't tell anyone."

"the drawing is great. the poem...." mike started.

"i'm working on it." lucas got off the bed and snatched the notebook away from mike.

"you're in l-o-v-e!!" mike jumped up and down.

"shut up! what do you want?" lucas asked.

"lets go to school early. i wanna see if we can find max's files."

"what? why?" lucas asked.

"nancy thinks she's bad news. i wanna see for myself." mike said,

lucas rolled his eyes. "count me out."
