"so." mike wheeler started once him and eleven were standing in front of two doors. "there's 2 bathrooms. one for the girls and one for the boys. the girls bathroom has a stick figure with a skirt on. see?" he pointed to the girls bathroom door.
eleven nodded and opened the door. she was surprised to see that there were stall doors, and not just a toilet and sink. "what..."
"you go into one of those stalls, and then you lock the door." mike giggled.
"come in." el grabbed mike's hand.
he blushed. "i'm - i'm not allowed... but fine." he smiled as they both walked into the girls bathroom.
"go into one of these stalls." mike said. eleven walked into the stall."do you see the lock?"
"yes." eleven said quietly
"okay. turn it to the side until you here a click sound." mike smiled when he heard the click. "there. now nobody will be able to watch you."
el took a really long time in the bathroom. honestly, mike didn't think she was even doing anything. he was right. she was mostly reading the graffiti on the walls and door.
suddenly, the girls bathroom door flew open, and a girl with long ginger hair walked in. she screamed when she saw mike standing in front of the stall door.
"what are you doing in here??" the girl asked.
"my cousin doesn't know how to use the bathrooms here." mike tried to say as casually as possible.
"okay." she shrugged it off. she was new here from california, so she was just getting used to hawkins. "i'm max. and you are?" the ginger girl leaned up against the wall and put her hand into one of her sweater pockets.
"mike. and this is my cousin, eleanor." he pointed to the stall door.
"hi." eleven yelled.
"hey i know you two! we're in the same class." max smirked.
the toilet flushed, and eleven managed to unlock the door.
"now you wash your hands." mike said.
"i know." she giggled as she skipped over to the sink and washed her hands.
"damn. is she homeless?" max asked as she looked at el's clothes.
"no!" mike rolled his eyes.
"what is homeless?" eleven asked.
"someone who doesn't have a home. so, not you." mike said as he took her arm to drag her away from max. he was surprised when she screamed out in pain.
"el! are you okay??" he asked, afraid that he might have hurt her.
el pulled her arm back. "yes." she lied.
"no, you're not." mike said as he rolled up her sweatshirt sleeve. there was a long red mark going across her arm. "what happened?"
el thought quick. "i fell."
"you don't get a mark like that from just falling, kid." max said. "what really happened?"
el tried to cover up."i fell from tree. tree scratched me." yes. that was a good one.
"ouch..." mike said, believing her. he carefully took her hand and started to walk out.
"hey, mike?" max called out.
"yeah?" he turned around.
"lets hang out after school." she said, trying to make a friend.
"what about at lunch?" mike suggested. "i'm busy after school."
"sweet. by the way, i'm skipping. don't tell the teacher." she said.
mike rolled his eyes as he shut the bathroom door and started to walk down the hallway holding onto el's hand.
when they walked back into the classroom, they sat down in their seats without saying anything as the teacher rambled on about multiplication.
"okay so if 5 times 5 is 25, what's 5 times 6?" the teacher looked around the room. "eleanor?"
she looked up at him in confusion.
"can you tell me what 5 x 6 is?" he asked again.
"five....... what?" she asked. the class tried to contain their giggles, but failed.
the teacher sighed in disappointment. he was about to say something, but the bell rang. eleven jumped up again in shock. "class dismissed." he yelled.
"what?" el looked around and saw all of the kids stand up from their seats and walk out of the class.
"hey." lucas said, as him, dustin and will walked over to mike's desk.
"we get to go to lunch now." mike told el. "did dan not give you any money?"
she slowly shook her head.
"it's okay. i've got some extra cash." he smiled.
"hey, mike." mike turned around to see max, the ginger girl from earlier.
"hey, max. uh, this is lucas, dustin and will. guys, this is max." he said as he stood up from his seat.
lucas stared at the beautiful girl in front of him. he's never seen anyone so attractive in his life!
what he didn't know is that the ginger girl thought the exact same of him."hey, max. are you coming to lunch with us?" will asked.
"unless it's a problem..." she started
"no! n-not a problem at all." lucas blushed.
the kids all walked to the cafeteria together and got their food. eleven was a bit confused on what to do, so mike guided her. once everyone had their trays, they all sat down at a table and started to eat their school lunches.
"what's sweden like?" max asked el.
she froze. "um... pretty." eleven said the only word that came to mind.
"cool. are you busy after school, el? i mean, i can only assume the boys are hanging out with mike." max said.
"you got it! we're going to the arca-" dustin started but was cut off by lucas putting his hand over his mouth. lucas wasn't the best at video games, and really didn't want max to watch him fail.
"cool. arcades are boring anyways, so i'm gonna pass. wanna go to the park or something?" she asked eleven.
"um." she was just about to say yes, but then she remembered dan. he told her to come straight home after school, or else. "i can't..."
"suit yourself." max said as the bell rang and all the kids went to their next class.
