Chapter Two

Present Day

No one bothers to even know the truth. Why do people have to be so rude and talk about it behind my back? Everyone around me acts like they understand. People don’t believe ‘wonderful’ Brandon Heights would cheat on his girlfriend. I even told people what happened. However, the whole student body seems to believe otherwise. They really think I cheated… or I screwed something up. Only like 5 people know the real story.  Everywhere I go, people whisper, give me looks of pity, or simply both. As I pass through the hallway to my last class of the day I hear the indirect conversations about me. Two girls in my grade whisper to each other:

“Hey did you hear about  Daisy! She’s dating Brandon Heights."

“Not even, I thought that was Malia’s best friend and Malia’s boyfriend!!"

“He was Malia’s boyfriend! Dude. Daisy. She's such a whore.”

“Wow. Who would of thought."

“I know right, I just feel bad for poor Malia, she’s such a loner now that their dating.”

I continue walking staring at my black converse, pretending like I can’t see them staring at me, and pretend I can’t hear a thing. It’s annoying, things like this are always indirectly about me, ever since that party three weeks ago. Yes, the following Monday of the party my one and only best friend, and my once amazing boyfriend made it official that they are going out; after the fact that he cheated on me on our four month anniversary.

Those girls in the halls were right though, for the last couple weeks, I’ve been alone.  Brandon and Daisy were actually the two constants in my life, and they both used me to get to each other. Whatever. Let’s just hope this period goes by fast…

After School:

Do you ever get that feeling where something just doesn’t seem right? I get them a lot... Well right now, I’m getting these strange feelings in my stomach when I arrive home from school because I’ve come to acknowledge that both of my parents’ cars are parked in the driveway. I know what you’re probably thinking, perhaps something along the lines of, ‘they’re your parents, so it shouldn’t be that big of a deal that there parked in their own driveway.’

However, this really isn’t the case; see my parents are rarely home at the same time or just home at all due to their busy work schedules. Well, both of my parents are nurses, and before anyone ask or says something rude, yes there are male nurses.   Honestly, the only time they aren’t at busy tending to patients is when we have family vacations (holidays), if they have important news of some sort, or if someone is really ill. Their absence doesn’t really bother me, but I’m an only child and all it does get awfully lonely now and then.

I’m kind of worried because they’re home, something big is going to happen and you should know that my gut feelings are usually right.  I quickly got out of my jeep (it’s like my baby. I got it on my sixteenth birthday last year) and brought myself to the doorstep. As I was opening the door to my dear humble abode my mother called out, “Honey, Malia is that you dear?”  Rolling my eyes, knowing she can’t see me, “No I’m a badass burglar and I am here to steal your goods… Yeah of course mom it’s me!”

I walk into the kitchen, my mom kisses me on the cheek “I could do without the attitude missy. How was your day?”

“It was fine.” I lie, I really don’t want her to freak out over me because I couldn’t handle my first heartbreak. See, I tell my mother almost every single thing. But, I didn’t tell her how exactly Brandon and I broke up, I  just told her it was a mutual agreement and she said she ‘understood.’

My dad came into the kitchen and I felt kind of awkward. So I opened my mouth and the curiosity got the best of me, “Why are you both home? I know that’s rude but you never are home unless something important is happening.”

My mom and dad had the same facial expression and then looked at each other knowingly. “Okay honey well, we actually do have some news.” see HA told you I had a weird feeling. But uh oh I don’t like the tone of voice my father’s using.

They looked at me and I gave a face as if saying, ‘carry on,’ and with that, they did.

“Well, you know your mother just finished her nurse practitioner schooling and there aren’t many job offerings here in NY. So she did some online searching, and applied at hospitals worldwide. It just so happened she got a job offer at a hospital that pays really well. We’re moving to California.”

Say what now.
