》karaoke night
[1640]Zane takes a few steps forward, walking over to the small black karaoke machine on the floor next to the television. His hands are clammy, nervous with sweat due to his being actually about to sing a song. It's not like he deliberately put himself in that situation; his friends -- namely Aphmau -- forced him to. The reasons being, he needed to ease up more, and singing a song might help. Everyone even promised not to judge him or laugh if he sang terribly. So there was nothing he could be too anxious about, right?
Wrong. For he's naturally afraid of having to do things with many people staring at him, even if he usually acts like he could never give two shits about what people think about him. Yet, just like everyone, there is that voice nagging from the corner of your brain yelling that you'll mess up. And now, that annoying voice is rather loud.
But there is another thing that unnerves Zane. There's deep meaning behind this song, though no one else in the room knows it. Except for perhaps one.
Yes, Zane is about to pour out his heart through song to one other human being: Travis.
Yet, Zane is truly convinced that said male doesn't return his feelings. The two had been friends for a few years now, and a certain emotion had begun to eat away at Zane for almost half of them. It's not like he wanted to catch these horrid feelings, they just snuck up on him. And now, he feels his heart would surely burst just by thinking of the emerald eyed man.
So, by scraping up every little speck of courage in his soul, he dared himself to do this. To sing a song from his heart. To send an indirect message to his crush. To finally let even a small portion of these insufferable feelings out of the cage he calls his body.
Zane types in the song name, and taps on a karaoke version of it. He pulls up the stool for the singer and sits down.
And that's how Zane Ro'meave, the coldest of the crew, sits before them now to sing Like I'm Gonna Lose You by Meghan Trainor.
The title and artist gently flash on-screen for a quick second, thus alerting the others of what song this is. Most reactions are gasps, with a few whispers here and there. It makes Zane more uneasy than he already is, but he's determined to finish this. Even if he ends up dying of embarrassment by the end of this.
The song starts off with a soft strum of a guitar, and immediately Zane begins to sing.
I found myself dreaming.
In silver and gold.
Like a scene from a movie,
That every broken heart knows.
Anyone that was talking grew quiet after Zane sang his first line. Many stared at him in disbelief. Others sat in silent surprise. The man that most thought would sing only decently, actually had the voice of an angel. Like, the heavenly creature touched his soul and blessed him with the gift of gentle song. This song fit perfectly with his low voice.
We were walking on moonlight.
And you pulled me close.
Split second and you disappeared,
And then I was all alone.
Zane clutched the microphone close to him. He had closed his eyes since the beginning -- unsure of where to look once he started. He focused on his singing, yet he was completely tense with the though that he was making a fool of himself.
Woke up in tears,
With you by my side.
Breath of relief,
And I realized:
No, we're not promised tomorrow.
Zane takes a quick yet big breath to prepare himself. He attempts to make his stance less rigid, and put more pure emotion into his voice.
So I'm gonna love you,
Like I'm gonna lose you.
I'm gonna hold you,
Like I'm saying goodbye.
Zane was so focused, he hardly heard anything around him. People started swaying gently, maybe even taking out their phones to hold like candles for some sort of comedic effect. But, the biggest thing he neglected to hear, was Travis himself shuffling about.
Wherever we're standing,
I won't take you for granted.
'Cause we'll never know when,
When we'll run out of time.
By now, Zane was mostly comfortable, the familiar voice in his mind drowned out by the gentle music. He even swayed left to right like some people around him, yet he still had his eyes closed. The somewhat loud music covered the moving of chairs.
So I'm gonna love you,
Like I'm gonna lose you.
So I'm gonna love you,
Like I'm gonna lose you.
Zane takes in a breath, ready to sing into the microphone once more, but another voice beats him to it.
In the blink of an eye,
Just a whisper of smoke,
You could lose everything.
The truth is you never know.
It was Travis, sitting on a stool a little ways from him. He had gotten the spare microphone, singing sweetly into it. He also had his eyes closed, while Zane had opened them and stared at him in disbelief. Others sat quietly, intently watching the beautiful scene unfold.
With the next line, Travis opens his eyes a sends Zane a gentle stare accompanied by a sly wink. The latter's face began to burn; the surprise along with the small flirt was enough to send Zane's face into flames. He immediately looked away, hiding his face only to be greeted with the people sitting to his left, who gave him urging looks.
So I'll kiss you longer babe,
Any chance that I get.
And I'll make the most of the minutes,
And love with no regret.
For the first few lines, Zane was so submerged in shock that he completely forgot to harmonize, if this was truly to be a duet. He missed a few chances to do so, so once he challenged himself to add onto the next part they could harmonize on.
Let's take our time, say what we want.
Say what we want.
Travis looked back at the male who began to sing again. He smiled, continuing to put his own soul into his words. For his heart had been captured by his friend as well, he just never had the guts to confront the feelings head-on. So when Zane went up there to sing a song that moves your heart strings, he had to respond this way. Even if it was a strange thing to do with a pretty big risk, he was willing. And that's better than what he's been accomplishing these past couple months with love.
Use what we've got,
Before it's all gone.
'Cause no, we're not promised tomorrow.
We're not promised tomorrow.
With a quick second, the two voices join into one, strengthening and reflecting back on each other. The difference in tones showed, but in a good way, being definitely different from the original singers, but with just as much of an emotional punch.
Their voices harmonize to begin the chorus.
So I'm gonna love you,
Like I'm gonna lose you.
I'm gonna hold you,
Like I'm saying goodbye.
Wherever we're standing,
I won't take you for granted.
'Cause we'll never know when,
When we'll run out of time.
Now they split back into two voices, yet the magical atmosphere they created remains intact, inspiring the singer and further shocking everyone else. Zane takes the lead, Travis delaying his words slightly.
So I'm gonna love you,
I'm gonna love you,
Like I'm gonna lose you.
Like I'm gonna lose you.
I'm gonna love you,
Ohh,
Once again they merge their voices.
Like I'm gonna lose you.
Like I'm gonna lose you.
A small instrumental breaks in, giving the two a chance to catch their breath. Even so, they do not look at each other just yet.
Both are not stiff as they prepare for the next part of the song. Both are fluent, swaying gently with the tender beat.
The break ends, and a new verse begins.
I'm gonna love you,
Ohh,
Like I'm gonna lose you.
Like I'm gonna lose you.
I'm gonna hold you,
Like I'm saying goodbye.
Bye.
The two pour their heart and soul into the eloquent string of notes in that single word, their voices erupting with pure affection at the end. They sing together for the last time in the song.
Wherever we're standing,
I won't take you for granted,
'Cause we'll never know when,
When we'll run out of time
So I'm gonna love you,
Like I'm gonna lose you.
I'm gonna hold you,
Like I'm gonna lose you.
The song ends with a tender strum of notes, the two people singing getting air, yet also smiling gently. They turn to each other, and like two pieces of a puzzle, two halves of a heart, they clicked with that one glance and understood immediately. They grin in agreement, for each of them knows the exact feelings the other shares. Both had just confessed their feelings through song.
And neither of them regretted it.
Travis stands and catches Zane a little off guard by walking over to him. The younger takes the older's hand in his own, and here, in front of everyone, he gives Zane a sweet kiss on the cheek.
While normally, Zane would act bashful and embarrassed, here he takes on a completely different attitude. The blue-eyed male gently grasps the others head and kisses him -- right on the lips.
He doesn't care if everyone else can clearly see them, for no one else matters. Here and now, he can only see Travis, because Travis, he's decided, is his soulmate.
And he is definitely not going to lose him.
