How To Write: Harry Potter Fanfictions

Throughout the world, there are tons of people I refer to as "canon-nazis". A canon-nazi is someone who hates when people diverge from canon material unless stated that it is an AU or something. I'm not hating on these people, as I am one myself. I'm saying that there are people out there who will harp on you if you mess up canon in your fanfic.

I've put down several fanfics for the simple reason of it strays too far from canonical information that is right at the author (and reader's) fingertips. Marauder's fanfics where they totally ditch characters such as Frank Longbottom, Marlene McKinnon, Dorcas Meadowes, etc. annoy me completely because these characters are important in later books.

However, there is an easy solution to this issue. Pottermore! For those of you who are unaware, Pottermore is J.K. Rowling's official website where she posts information about characters, creatures, locations, and others. Almost anything you could possibly need about canon information is on there, so it makes a great location to find information.

You have to create an account, but with your account, you can officially get sorted, discover your wand, your Patronus, and your Ilvermourny house. It's a great website, so I suggest checking it out at https://www.pottermore.com.
