***Question of the chapter:

Who's your favorite character so far?

---

"I can't get a tattoo, I don't have the money," I admitted, blushing. You don't want people to know how broke you are.

"It's on the house, Lyra," Sam said softly.

"I can't let you do a tattoo for me for free."

"I'm not doing it. My mom is," he said, pushing me towards his mother. I tripped over and he had to catch me.

God, why was I so clumsy.

The boys laughed as he helped me to my feet.

I was probably as red as a tomato by now.

"Boys, why don't you go do something while Ruby and I work on Lyra's tattoo," Grace pulled me towards her, saving me from anymore embarrassment that could have occurred.

The boys started to argue, but Grace and Ruby glared at them and they quickly left the tattoo parlor.

"So, what would you like?" Ruby asked me, handing Grace her sketch pad.

"There're two tattoos that I've wanted for a while now, so do you think you could do them both for me. I'll pay for the last one."

"No need." Ruby smiled. "Now tell us what you want."

"Uhm, I wanted 'I am the architect of my own destruction' on my back. And then on my right rib cage, I wanted 'Always on my mind, Forever in my heart'."

They nodded and immediately got to work on the tattoos.

I couldn't believe this was actually happening.

I thought I would have to wait months before I could get my tattoo, but here I was, in one of the best tattoo studios in the county.

Ten minutes later, Grace was ready to start on the one of my back.

"So, who're the tattoos for?" Grace asked.

"This one's for my best friend. She killed herself two months ago. The one Ruby's doing is for my parents. They died in a car accident five months ago," I said nonchalantly.

They exchanged looks, Grace stopped tattooing me.

"Lyra--" I cut Ruby off.

"It's fine. I don't care."

It hurt to just brush it off like that, but I wasn't going to let them see how broken I was.

Without saying anything else, they got to work again.

Twenty-five painful minutes later, my first tattoo was done.

I examined it in the mirror. It was beautiful. It had the old American Typewriter kind of font.

I hugged Grace tightly and thanked her a million and one times.

Halfway through my second tattoo, the boys came back.

I felt extremely self-conscious. Why you ask? Because my whole stomach was exposed.

It didn't look like it affected them at all, but still.

They didn't say anything, but the minute it was done they started talking.

"Let's see them!"

"Did it hurt?!"

"Man you have a nice body!"

"When did you get your belly ring?"

"Are you sure you're not single?"

"Let her first see the tattoo," Ruby laughed. I pushed past the boys.

The tattoo was beautiful. It was done in calligraphy.

"Thank you so much. It's beautiful. Both of them are. I don't know how I'm going to repay you for this..." I trailed off.

"Don't worry sweetheart," Grace smiled at me. "You're part of the family now."

I know they were only saying this because they knew that I didn't have parents. I didn't want to argue though.

"I should probably get going," I said. Even though it was only one, I didn't want to overstay my welcome. "Uhm, thanks again."

I turned around and walked towards the exit.

Just before I got there, somebody pulled me back.

Because I'm me, I stumbled and fell on top of the person. It was Sam. I instantly started blushing.

He laughed.

"You really are clumsy, aren't you?" He asked. I nodded sheepishly.

He helped me up.

"You're not going anywhere, Lyra," Jace said.

"Yeah," Pierce agreed. "You heard what Grace said. You're part of the family now."

"Besides, your grandparents said you weren't allowed home until tonight," Seth said.

"Where are your parents?" Pierce asked, tilting his head to one side.

"Dead," I said quickly. "So, what do you want to do today? We could go to the skatepark. Anything is fine. As long as we don't go to a place with spiders. I don't like spiders."

The boys looked at each other. Sam started to say something, but Ruby stopped him.

"Why don't you guys go to the skatepark? I like that idea," she said. The boys nodded.

We said goodbye to the two of them and then left.

On the way to the skatepark, we played the new Of Mice and Men album. It was a really good one. I was in love with the song Bones Exposed.

The rest of the day was really nice, we just chilled. The boys taught me how to skate and by the time I went home, I was pretty much a pro.

Okay...a pro that was going to have fifty million bruises tomorrow.

That night was the first night in a long time that I actually slept and boy did it feel good.
