SKYLAR

It feels weird coming back here without him.

Every summer since I was eight, my older brother Cameron and I would stay at our aunt Stacey's beach house in Laguna beach. We loved coming here, especially since her neighbors had two sons our age.

But things are different now.

My brothers gone.

It's been almost a year now since my brother died from a car accident. Part of me doesn't want to be here, but the other part of me just graduated high school and thought why not one last hurrah. At least that's what my best friend Anna keeps telling me. Plus, it's a great excuse to get away from my parents. They've always argued, but since my brothers passing it's gotten a lot worse, and I don't want to stick around for that.

I needed to get away. I need the distraction.

And I know my Aunt Stacey is the perfect person to help with that. Thankfully, my two best friends are tagging along with me, and I get to finally see my boyfriend Ben after being three months apart from each other.

We pull up into the driveway, and Anna and Kelly immediately get out excited at the place we'll be staying at for the whole summer. The house is always different when I visit. Before the house was a sky blue and now it's all white, and her patio furniture has changed too. I get out of the drivers side and take in the view of the beach. Of course it's still the same as the last time I was here. My chest suddenly tightens of all the memories with Cameron.

This is going to be harder than I thought.

"Well, look who finally showed up!" Aunt Stacey yells as she's coming down the patio steps holding her cell phone up. I think she's recording me. She walks over to me and smiles and wraps her arm around my shoulder and pulls me in close so I'm in camera view. "See Barbs your daughter made it here safe and sound. I'll take it from here," Stacey lets go of me and looks through the filters on her phone.

"Ooh I like this one. And send! Well now that we got that out of the way. Hello Cupcake," she smiles. She hugs me, and I smile at the nickname she's given me since I was five.

I remember it like it was yesterday when she came to visit to babysit us while my parents went away for the weekend. I wanted to make cupcakes and we spent hours making them and had made a huge mess in the kitchen. The cupcakes turned out horrible, but it's one of my favorite memories with her.

She backs away and looks down at my cleavage with wide eyes. "Damn cupcake! Your boobs got bigger!" she exclaims.

"You say that every year," I remind her.

"That's because ever year they get bigger," she winks. She suddenly gets serious and gives me a sincere smile. "I've missed you."

"I missed you too." And I did.

The last time I saw her was Cameron's funeral. She always kept in touch, but it's been almost a year since I've seen her. She gives me a sad smile and I force a smile back. Anna and Kelly walk over to us and Aunt Stacey looks at them up and down with wide eyes, grinning. I honestly forgot they were here for a second.

"You must be Skylar's Aunt. I'm Anna, this is Kelly," Anna greets.

"Nice to meet you, and please call me Stacey or Stace for short. Damn Cupcake you never said your friends were hot! You girls are definitely going to be able to get into the clubs without having to show ID," she grins.
