Good or bad, everything we do is our best choice at that moment.
- William Glassler
"What, oh shit? Em?"
Dan was trying to push my hair away and pull my hand from my face, but I hissed.
"Ian. There." I tried to point at one of the lounge sets in front of the club window as inconspicuously as possible. "Did he see me? Is he looking?"
"Oh fuck." He mimicked my reaction. "Uhm. No. I don't think so. Wait."
I grunted as Dan stretched his neck as far as he could to get a clear view of the man.
"Be more obvious." I murmured. If Ian would notice me this was not going to be pretty. I wasn't supposed to be going out, and he had a bit of a thing against me wearing a dress and high heels around other men. Jealous prick.
"No, he hasn't noticed you yet I think. He seems to be rather... busy."
Finally I dared to look up, only to see my future husband very occupied with some skimpy dressed girl on his lap. How surprising.
"Great." Sarcasm was dripping off my voice as I rolled my eyes. And here I had thought this day couldn't possibly get any worse. I hoped she'd give him chlamydia.
"Yeah..." Dan was squinting his eyes as an annoyed scowl took possession of his mouth. "Astonishing really, how that asshole of yours manages to ruin things so effectively."
He had already gotten up and was ready to march Ian's way, but I pulled him back down on his stool with a firm tug.
"No." I objected as cogently as I could muster. "I don't fucking care, just leave it be. He hasn't spotted us yet, so we can still get out of here without causing a scene."
Knowing Ian he would put on quite the performance if he noticed me. A glass of whiskey stood on the table in front of him, which meant he had been drinking, and since he seemed to be with work buddies he was probably also using. Cocaine, pills, whatever they got their hands on. Apparently it was a method of stress relieve.
"You sure?" Dan obviously wasn't ready to back down just yet. "That girl is one of Cath's colleagues. She knows damn well he's off limits, and he just got engaged to you for God's sake."
His readiness to protect me was extremely endearing, but if he acted upon it there was a huge chance it would get him beaten up.
"Yes." I hissed the word as I started to pull at his sleeve. "I'm sure. Trust me, it's not worth the hassle."
After throwing one last furious glance my friend let out a sigh and allowed me to pull him with me. We had almost reached the top of the stairs when I heard a low voice call out my name.
