"Again? Seems we gotta put a leash on this girl," I mutter as grasshopper-like creatures fly towards us.

Disgusting.

Leon shoots a glare, and do I say, if looks could kill... Screeches take our attention as one flies towards Leon, it's sharp claws baring and eyes glowing. Leon reacts quickly, kicking the giant bug away and pushing himself further from the thing. I do the same thing as another comes at me, its shriek deafening as it falls on its back. I look at Leon and take in his serious, irritated expression.

This doesn't seem like his usual combat personality, and his tactics are becoming sloppy. My head turns back to the swarm around me, focusing on each being that flies in my vision. I shoot a few, but they just keep coming.

"Leon! I need backup!" I shout towards him, the condensation from my brow dripping onto my cheeks as more fill my view.

"I'll be there as fast as I can," he yells back, irritation noticeable in his tone.

"Hurry! I can't hold all of them back!"

"First Ashley, now you? Learn to help yourself!"

My eyebrows crease together, and I consider his words. No way is this Leon talking, because it's too aggressive to be. I quickly look across to see him, and can't help but see the difference in his eyes. The bluest eyes I've ever seen now appeared a blood red, and the illustration of anger was prevailing the Leon I knew before.

What the hell?

Before I could mutter a word, my body jolts as I'm kicked to the ground, and the haze I currently resided in cleared as a swarm lingers above me. They hover for a bit, then land on the stone floor, hopping closely as I quickly move away from them. I jump to my feet, but before I could fight them off, I'm lifted off the ground. I could feel a tightening grip around my arm as I soar into the air, the creature jetting high, distancing us from anything that could help me.

I thrash in its grip, trying to unclamp myself somehow, but with one glance down proved that move fatal and reckless. The creature flies fast and drifts further from the hollow ground, jaggedly buzzing towards the empty sides of the giant room. We hovered over the dark abyss, nothing but black engulfing my view. I quickly grab it's leg and try to stay afloat, but it starts to move side to side in serrated motions, making it hard to hang on. Three sudden stops and I'm hanging by one arm, yelling in panic as my grip slips.

Time goes by in a slow blur as I fall from the height. My position is out of reach from the platform, so I can't grasp ahold of anything. My eyes search frantically, finally making eye contact with the one person that I wanted to see before I died. He was kicked down, a yell slipping past his slightly calloused lips as he met the stone floor. His head turns and the blue jewels that once held the lights of humor and determination were gone.

"Leon!" I say, hoping he'd hear the faint tone of my voice. Sadly, time no longer lingered, and the volume of my call was no more than a blur as time sped up. I was weightless; nothing supporting me as dark, cold winds engulf my entire existence, biting at me relentlessly. The light that shrouded the foundation above grew smaller and smaller, only to become a speck of salt in my vision as I finally hit the bottom. That's when everything went black.

Leon's Perspective

Fuck.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

"(F/N)!"

A grunt escapes as my back hits the ground, the giant insect screeching as it begins retching towards me. My actions are static as I find myself shooting relentlessly at the horrific beings, each one falling to the ground with a scream before collapsing. A few moments pass before the last creature bellows, making a gurgle as fluid floods its lungs. Gasps escape and I'm brought back to a deafening silence, conscious that what happened to (F/n) wasn't fantasy. She was actually gone, and I couldn't save her.

The palm of my hand is rough and cold as it cradles the weight of my head. I couldn't risk yelling; the noise might attract nearby enemies and I was no longer in the fearless inclination I've held since the start of this mission. Instead, I turn this yearning pain of loss into frustration.

Why do people have to die?

Why can't I save those who've helped me?

First Luis, now her?

Does this mean Ashley will die because I can't keep her safe?

I can't contain it anymore; the pain, the suffering, the loss.

I peer down, my sight shifting from the dead corpse of each beast and their mangled position. Their eyes reflected death, each one cloudy and open, which followed with a sour smell. They deserved a worse way to die. I begin kicking and stomping away, their bodies becoming mush as red flashes  my vision. Memories from the past rush through my head and I'm brought back to the faces of those I couldn't protect; Krauser, Luis, (F/n), Manuela, the civilians of Raccoon City.

...No

No, I can't think like this. (F/n) would hate my behavior right now, and she'd probably kick my ass for giving up this easy. I can't give up now
