Chapter Eight

Russell sat next to his little girl as she layed in the hospital bed; a glumly look on her features. She was in the worst pain ever. Her head hurt like she had just came head to head with a bull, she felt like crying but didn't know why, she felt like everything was all a blur, and the light in her hospital room wasn't making it any better.

Then, a doctor stepped foot in the room, and Russell jumped up from his chair. "How is she, doc?"

"Well, she has a severe concussion," he stated making Russell frown. "She'll recover but all in weeks time. She;s not allowed to do anything electronically for the first week and keep her out of the light. The best thing she can do is probably play cards or color. Then, after a week, she can watch limited tv. And make sure she eats more than she usually does, her brain needs the nutrients."

Russell only nodded. He already knew what to do, as he had suffered a concussion before as well. "Can she go home?"

"Yes, she is free to go home, She doesn't have amnesia or anything that should keep her overnight," the doc said. "I'll give you two some privacy...when you are ready to leave, you can sign her out at the desk."

"Thank you, sir," Russell told him before turning to his baby girl who was trembling in the bad. He picked her up slowly and balanced her on his hip. "What's wrong, baby?"

"I'm scared," she whimpered. "My brain feels like it's about to burst!" And with that, Madison broke down crying.

Russell hated seeing her like that; crying. He rubbed circles on her back trying to calm her down.

Madison sniffled a few times. "Where's Mason?"

"He's at Ryan's house," Russell told her. "Come on, baby, let's go home."

After signing her out, he buckled her into her booster seat and they headed home.

"Daddy, do I have to go to school?" Madison asked. Russell shook his head no. "How long will I be out."

"Probably about two weeks," he answered.

A small smile appeared on her face. "That's 14 days of no school!"

When they made it into the house, Russell unbuckled Madison and carried her inside. He set her on the counter before taking out things for a PB&J sandwich. Madison already knew it was for her.

"Daddy, I'm not hungry," Madison whimpered.

"I know, but you have to eat every hour," he informed her. Madison started crying. Russell looked at her with sorrow in his eyes. "I know, baby. I know you don't wanna eat."

"I don't know why I'm crying," she cried. Russell knew, though; it was one of the symptoms. "And I'm not hungry."

"How about you eat just one half," Russell offered. Madison nodded in compliance. Once he had made her a sandwich and gave her half, Madison walked over to the living room and turned on the tv. She turned on the tv and began to watch it. Russell walked over to her before turning off the tv.

"Maddie, you can't watch tv right now. No games or tv." Madison's bottom lip began to quiver, and she became aggravated because she didn't know why she was crying. She usually never cried like this.

"What am I suppose to do then?"

"You can color or go play with your toys."

Madison frowned. "I don't wanna do that." She had lost total interest in all her favorite things except the television and Xbox. "Daddy, can I have some medicine?"

"I'm afraid medicine won't do much good for you, all you need is rest," Russell explained to her.

Madison began to cry again, and Russell picked her up and rubbed circles on her back. Boy, did he hate seeing her cry with a red stained face. "Shh, Maddie. It's going to be ok, you'll be well soon. No more crying please. Daddy doesn't like seeing you like this. You're my little soldier." Despite her being a girl, he always called her a soldier along with her brother Mason. It always seemed to sooth them and make them want to do anything; that one word.

As Russell was telling her all this, he made his way upstairs into the kids' room. He set Madison on the ground before going through her drawers and getting her some clothes to change into. He changed her before going to change himself. Then, Russell placed Madison in his bed and he got in himself. Madison curled up against him under the covers.

"Try to go to sleep," Russell told her.

"I can't," Madison whined. "My head hurts too much."

"if you want to get better, you have to rest," Russell said gently. Madison knew he was right, but the pain was too great. She sighed as she curled into her father's chest and went to sleep.

A FEW HOURS LATER...

Russell had woke up at 6:00 that evening. He let out an audible yawn before searching for the person who he had fell asleep with. Where did Madison go?

Russell got up and walked to the hallway. He could hear Teen Titans Go play in the background downstairs. Russell snuck stealthily downstairs and watch his daughter laugh at the tv show. He crossed his arms over his chest while he continued to watch; he cleared his throat. Madison jumped up from her seat, but she whimpered as her head began to hurt again from the quick movement.

"Madison," Russell started sternly. "You know you cannot watch tv.

"I know," Madison looked down at the ground. "But I was really bored!"

Russell sighed. He knew he couldn't really say anything. It would be completely different if she was fifteen and not five.

Russell walked over to her, picked her up, set her down at the kitchen table, and gave her the other half of the PB&J sandwich. After thirty long, agonizing minutes of eating half of a sandwich, Madison had finished as Ashton came home from work. Russell greeted her first. "Hey, Babe."

Ashton responded by placing a kiss on his cheek. "Hey, honey."

"Mommy!" Madison jumped up from the kitchen table to hug her mother.

"My poor baby," Ashton cooed as she picked up Madison. "That batter was a meany pants." Ashton placed a sloppy kiss on her daughter's lips making the five year old giggle.

"How was work?" Russell asked.

"Fine, how was your day?"

"Long," Russell sighed.

"Has she had a bath yet?" Ashton questioned. Russell shook his head no. "Maddie, do you want to get a bath with me?" Madison nodded.

"I'll take care of her for the rest of the night," Ashton told her husband. "You need to rest for tomorrow's game."

The game was so far in Russell's mind despite it being less than 24 hours away.
