Chapter Twelve
Russell sighed as he leaped out of bed and walked towards his children's bedroom. He was on his own for the day because Ashton was going to be working in the ER all day after an explosion in downtown Seattle. So yeah, it was just going to be him and the kids for the day; once they got home from school that is.
He strode into Madison and Mason's room, and he saw Madison and Mason curled up in Mason's bed together; the two twins clutched each other, Madison's head buried in the crook of Mason's neck while Mason's head was faced down on the bed. He smiled before singing, "Wakey wakey, you two. It's time for school."
"NO!" The two of them shouted while throwing the covers over their heads.
"Yes, you two will have fun at school today. Now, let's get those teeth brushed, faces washed, and clothes on." Madison trudged to the bathroom to go wash up while Russell helped his son change into a black Batman shirt, dark blue jeans, and high top white Converses. The twins switched places, and Russell changed Maddie into a black Batman shirt, a black ruffled skirt and leggings, and white high top Converses.
Russell led the two downstairs before beginning to cook them breakfast when the phone rang. He answered, "Hello?"
"Is this the Wilson residence?" A female voice spoke over the phone.
"Yes, who am I speaking with?" Russell wondered.
"This is Parker Chapel Elementary School where your kids attend. I was calling to tell you that the school is closed due to the need to repaint some of the classrooms."
"Ah okay," he nodded. "Thanks for calling me...bye."
"I've got good news, kiddos," Russell said and turned to his kids. "No school today. They're redoing the classrooms at your school."
"YAY!" They cheered in unison.
"Daddy, can we paint today?" Madison asked.
"Sure, baby," he agreed before kissing her on the forehead. "After breakfast."
Russell cooked them a batch of waffles to have with their side of fruit. Once the twins were done eating, they sat down at the table with a couple tubes of paint, paper, and paint brushes.
Mason looked out the back door to see the rain drizzling down from the sky, creating a pool of mud outside. That's when he saw a small, brown boxer puppy outside the glass door, paws on the glass. The young pup was covered in mud and fur drenching with rain water. Mason gasped and pointed at the door before calling, "Maddie, look at the doggie!"
Madison glanced up from her art project to look at the cute dog out in the backyard. She gasped and ran towards the door after looking for her father who was nowhere in sight. She pushed the back door open with all of her might before running outside to see the puppy run off. "No!" Maddie cried while chasing after the dog. Mason ran after her but tripped causing himself and Madison to fall into the muddy ground.
The dog barked happily, trotting over to the two fallen toddlers. Mason reacted quickly and grabbed the puppy before it could run away from them. "I got ya!"
"Good, now let's get him inside before Daddy finds out!" Madison squealed. The two twins ran upstairs to the bathroom, closing the door right behind them.
Russell half listened to his agent on the phone in an attempt to try to concentrate on his kids coming from the kitchen. He stepped out of the downstairs office before going into the kitchen to find it completely empty of his children. He did, however, find the back door open and a trail of mud leading up the stairs. Russell sighed but followed the tracks upstairs nonetheless. He could hear the water running from outside the bathroom and the two kids giggling profusely.
