My head throbs and my vision is fuzzy.
Is this what a hangover feels like? How do people stand this? Why do people like alcohol? Everything hurts. What even happened?
Wait.
The last thing I remember was being knocked out. Again.
I was on an operating table. I was in a room with mirrors for walls. Now I am in a metal chair, just large enough to fit me. It is shaped vaguely like a small sofa, except it has no cushions and made entirely out of steel. It is bolted to the ground and my wrists, and ankles are cuffed onto the seat. Everything is pitch black, except for the small lightbulb above me, and a glowing screen before me, which is also black. The lightbulb is hanging off of nothing more than the wires attaching it to the ceiling. The screen displays the words 'Leader' and below that is a white line.
Where even am I? What did that man do to me?
The screen speaks.
"Hello there."
The line moves up and down with the tone and volume of the voice. It's the same voice as the man in the mask. Still vaguely familiar. I swear I've heard it before. But where?
"I am speaking to you through your chip. Please be aware that you will not remember anything from your past. Do not panic. This is completely normal and if you do remember anything, please report it to the nearest Extirpator. I am your leader. You will call me as such. I am only here to help and care for you throughout the rest of your life. You will start a new life with your new family unit. If you have any questions, ask the nearest Extirpator."
He doesn't know. He doesn't know that I can still remember. Whatever concoction he cooked up to erase everybody's memories doesn't effect me. I'm immune. But how? Why?
The very room that I am in seems to be dissolving. Melting away. In the blink of an eye I find myself on a soft, white bed. Light pours through a window to my right. My vision is no longer fuzzy but my head still hurts like a bitch.
I squeeze my eyes shut, massaging my temples. As soon as I open my eyes again, I see a lady looming over me. A forced smile is plastered onto her face. The grin is so wide and stretched out, that I could almost feel how much it must hurt her cheeks.
"Good morning honey!", she says in an overly cheerful voice. It was an octave too high and closely resembled a bell.
"Should I know you?", I said cautiously.
"I'm Kate!.. er... that's what I named myself. I asked the Extirpators and they told me to pick my own name. What would you like to be called?"
"Audrey."
"Well then, Audrey, I'm your mother in this family unit! Now get ready! You don't want to be late for school!"
Not wanting to hear her voice any longer, I press on a forced smile and nod quickly. She leaves, closing the door behind her.
I look around and I see the bathroom. I quickly brush my teeth, shower, and brush my hair. I step out of the bathroom and find a closet. On the closet is a sign that reads: All articles of clothing that you own other than the ones that came in this closet, must be disposed of. I look through the closet. There are seven identical white T-shirts, blue jeans, white socks, bras, underwear, and a pair of sneakers. I shrug off the clothes I am currently wearing and put on the ones presented to me.
Come to think of it, how did I get into these clothes in the first place? I don't remember putting on a dress, or this jacket... somebody changed me. I immediately fill with disgust. I feel like I'm going to puke. What is happening? Why is it happening? I guess I never stopped to think in the midst of everything. Wait. Is this even real? Is this a dream? What was in that punch? The apocalypse was the craziest thing that's ever happened to me. Nothing could top that. Maybe that's why I never started questioning my sanity until now.
"Audrey! You don't wanna be late!", Kate sings, her voice pulling me away from my thoughts.
"Coming!"
I make my way downstairs. Kate awaits me with a backpack and a lunch bag. I grab both.
Just go with it Audrey. You'll figure it out... I hope.
