Chapter Eighty-Four: Mindful People
_____________

A/N: Your family is purely a product of my imagination. It doesn't follow the series, nor is it the equivalent of Aaron's canon family.
______________

Your eyes widened. "Mom and Dad? They never write us."

"I know, that's what makes this so scary to open." Aaron handed you the envelope. "You open it."

You shoved it back into his chest. "No, I think you can. After all, you're the one who got it."

He tucked the letter into your shirt so that it was sticking out of the neckline. "Exactly. I got it already, so it's only fair that you open it."

You laughed at the letter sticking out of your clothing. Now that Aaron had lightened the mood like he always does, you felt more confident about opening it. "Fine, I'll do it." You quickly pulled the letter from your shirt and ripped it open. "That just means I get to know what it says first."

As you read it line by line, your expression dropped. Aaron was going to continue joking around, but he saw the grim expression on your face and decided against it.

You sighed and handed the note over to Aaron. "I didn't know they were even in contact with Grandma and Grandpa."

He knit his brows, reading the letter for himself. "They want us to come out for a visit?" Aaron asked rhetorically; obviously he knew what the letter right in front of him stated. "We've never met Grandma and Grandpa before. They weren't even a part of our childhood."

While Aaron reread the letter, you looked to Garroth for support, though you knew he had no part in this.

He smiled reassuringly when he noticed your gaze, and mouthed the words, "You okay?" soundlessly.

You shook your head lightly, trying not to derail Aaron's attention from the message. Garroth's small smile dropped into concern.

"Mom and Dad never even talked about them until now." Aaron tried to piece his thoughts together.

The letter was friendly, but you could tell Mom was sugar coating it. This matter wasn't lighthearted. Your grandfather had deteriorated in his mental state in the last year and your family needed you and Aaron to come out for a visit to take care of him. But of course, you'd also be having a family reunion.

You hadn't actually finished reading the letter before handing it over to Aaron to finish, so you still didn't know when you were supposed to embark to their village.

Aaron's eyes moved from line to line, rereading everything. "They want Garroth to come, too."

"What? Why?" You looked over Aaron's shoulder. "Are you sure?"

"Right here." Aaron pointed to the middle paragraph and started reading. "'We're ecstatic about your last letter to us, Aaron. ____, please bring your boyfriend along, we'd love to meet him! You write about him so much it's like we already know him.'"

You squeaked after Aaron read that out loud, then tried to hide behind him.

Garroth raised an eyebrow. "And you suppose that means me?"

"I didn't write about you! I've only written to them like once," you said sheepishly.

"I write to them pretty regularly, but I still never said anything about you having a boyfriend," Aaron admitted, and you somehow believed him.
