In the morning, sunlight filtered through the curtains and into the room. The spot where Garroth slept next to you was still warm, but he was no where to be seen.

On the other side of the door, you overheard the guards in lighthearted conversation. Not wanting to interrupt, you turned over in an attempt to fall back asleep, but it was difficult to tune out the noise of bantering men on the other side of your door.

"Don't be so paranoid. We won't wake her up." It was Laurance's voice. "Your girl will get her beauty rest."

Were they talking about you already? And like that? Way to kiss and tell. Except somehow, you couldn't bring yourself to believe Garroth was the type who'd immediately brag to everybody in the vicinity. They probably weren't even talking about you.

There was laughter, but still not Garroth's—you could easily distinguish his because it had come to be one of your favorite sounds. The foreign guffaw was cut short by a fit of coughing, so it must have been Dante's. "You won't even let me step foot,"—Dante paused to heave— "in your bedroom. I can't believe you've let her twice."

Dante's call-out was met by a familiarly charming chuckle and the clank of chainmail rubbing against itself. Okay: that one was definitely Garroth, so they were talking about you. Unless he'd let another girl into his bedroom twice.

"You like her or something?" Dante jabbed. "I know she's part of your assignment, but seriously. You put way more on the line for her than a normal person would for their job."

"What's it matter to you?" Garroth started lightheartedly, the smirk evident in his voice. "You'll be jealous if I'm unavailable?"

Dante stammered, so Laurance swooped in. "I swear to god Garroth, you better still kiss the homies goodnight."

Footsteps echoed down the hallway. Someone either left, or a new person entered. "Hey, Dante. I just wanted to see if you were feeling any better. I brought you this soup," Lord Aphmau said.

Dante cleared his throat and took her gift graciously, the metal container clattering as it moved with the spoon. "Thank you, kindly, mi'lady."

"Anything for Phoenix Drop's guards. I'm sure you've all been working yourselves overtime. And thank you, Garroth," Lord Aphmau used the smooth transition to redirect her attention, "for taking Dante's shift last night." You could imagine Lord Aphmau being her ecstatic self, but it was only a vision.

Garroth coughed guiltily—not from sickness. "Uh, yeah. Of course, mi'lord."

Since the boys weren't talking about you anymore, you decided to step outside and show them that you were awake. You cautiously stepped towards the door. When you pulled it open, it creaked, causing Laurance, Dante, Garroth, and Lord Aphmau to all turn their attention straight to you.

You waved meekly, pulling at your sweatshirt collar to fan some air. "Uh, hi. Good morning."

Lord Aphmau looked at you and her eyes grew wider than saucers.

"Oh yeah. ____ slept here last night," Garroth informed the Lord awkwardly, as if she hadn't just watched you walk out of his bedroom.

"No kidding . . . It's good to see you didn't abandon your task, at least. It was smart to bring her here during your shift." Lord Aphmau turned her attention to you at the mention, and after a moment of smiling, her jaw dropped. "Are those your clothes, Garroth?"
