Chapter Eighty: Little Ray of Sunshine
________________
*unedited, lines up with last chapter*Zoey's POV:
Sometimes life is fun. Sometimes it comes around to kick you in the butt. Sometimes you're not even sure what's happening is actually reality.
Second chances like to tag along, and are a great method to redeem yourself, if they're offered. Sometimes you don't deserve them, though. But maybe sometimes you don't even want them in the first place.
I sure didn't ask to be magically teleported back to the start of my day for the umpteenth time, but whatever, how's your day going?
Maybe Destiny is calling upon me to prevent a massive disaster, but Fate is chuckling in the corner, like, "That's not gonna happen, sweetie. We're actually just watching you suffer."
After getting nailed on the head by a bucket first thing in the morning, I was pretty much done. Just let the day pan out. Whatever. Don't interfere with Destiny's plan.
Much to my surprise, that approach seemed to work. With the exception of refraining from ordering a hot chocolate (I suddenly wasn't in the mood for that), I sucked it up and dealt with whatever life threw at me. Which happened to be a pair of dentures, but you know. I'm totally fine with that.
"Oh my gosh! Isn't getting hit with dentures one time enough? Why again?" I buried my face deep into the space between my crossed arms on the table. "Seriously, I-" I looked up from my arms, planning on ranting to Aaron. Problem was, he wasn't there and I was on my doorstep.
After a few more runs of today, I tried to figure out if changing the timeline would help. I tried convincing Aaron to go straight to ____'s house a few times before concluding that that strategy was useless.
After two more visits to the retro cafe, I figured out that every time I got pelted with soggy dentures, the shady guy in the corner was the same guy who always bolted out the door. This time, I made a point of not sitting down. Instead, I waited for the black-hoodie guy to stalk up to his table
Weirdo arrived, and I let him have it. "Listen, buddy. I've put up with a lot of crap today. Whatever you're planning on doing, whatever it is that you're thinking up there, just don't."
I didn't think I was that scary, but by the way this young kid was up out of his seat in no time, I'd say I did a fairly okay job at getting my point across.
"Oof, jeez, Zoey," Aaron mumbled. "What was he doing? Looking at you the wrong way or something?"
Ugh. "No, it's not-!"
Aaron shot his hands up defensively. "Woah," he exclaimed with wide eyes.
I sighed. "Sorry. Whatever, it's nothing." I took a deep breath, closing my eyes and opening them up a new, absolutely delighted person. "Today's going to be great!"
"Uh," Aaron nodded his head skeptically, "sure."
"Let's just get out of here," I sighed exasperatedly, already halfway through the doorway.
"Aren't we going to wait for ____?" Aaron gestured around the room. "After all, she's the reason we're here in the first place."
At this point, the idea of grilling ____ about the party had been filed away to the forgotten recesses of my mind ages ago. There was so much more that I needed to wrap my brain around. I stepped back inside, closing the door. "She isn't coming; she forgot about breakfast."
