Mrs. Davies looked out of it when we got to the car.
“Are you ok, Mrs. Davies?” I asked her.
“Hmm…” She seemed hesitant to say something.
“What is it?” I frowned, fearing more drama was to come.
“What happened between Luke and you this afternoon, Lily?” There was no judgment in her question. She was just asking for facts.
“I met Mattie…” I said in a small voice.
“And?” Ben prompted.
“And, nothing… He showed me his room, he looked upset all of a sudden so we talked for a while, Luke arrived and they left to the park…” I said quickly.
“What was he upset about?” Nancy asked.
“His mother had told him that Luke and she didn’t love each other anymore because of him…” I couldn’t mask my anger.
“That girl is just…” Ben remembered Nancy was in the car with us just in time.
“What did you tell him?” She cut him off sadly.
“That it wasn’t his fault, that older people often fell out of love, and that it didn’t change the fact that both his parents loved him very much…” I muttered.
“Did Luke hear all of this?” She asked.
“I think he did, but I’m not sure…” I answered. “Why?”
“He looked sad when he came back from the park with Mattie…” She muttered.
All because of me… I thought, feeling really bad.

I went upstairs as soon as we got back. I had to talk to him.
I tried his room with no luck, so I decided to go to Mattie’s.
“Daddy, it’s Lily!” Mattie exclaimed cheerfully when he opened the door. I couldn’t help but smile at how adorable he was.
I didn’t think Luke would be so welcoming and I was kind of expecting one of his outbursts.
I was confused when nothing happened. I took a step inside the room, and was taken aback by the shy look on his face.
I frowned at him to indicate that I didn’t understand.
“I thought we had scared you off…” He whispered.
“Well, I kind of have a question…” I muttered, feeling awkward.
“Mattie, I’m just going outside to talk to Lily for a minute, ok Buddy?”
“Ok, Daddy.”
He bent down to kiss the little boy on the top of the head.
“I love you, Daddy.” Mattie said, before going back to his toys.
Luke slid the door open and we both went outside.
“So…” He said with both his hands tucked deep into his jeans pockets.
I took a deep breath.
“Ok, I hope you’re not going to misinterpret what I’m about to ask but…” I sighed. “What are you expecting of me?” I started, but realized it sounded really bad… “No, that didn’t come out right what I mean is… I… Well…”
“Lily…” He interrupted my rambling. “What do you mean by expecting?”
I sighed again.
