Chapter 6

Lucca

Crack! I whimper in pain. There's a rope tied around my wrists. I wriggle my arms around in hopes of getting free but I only receive more pain as the rope digs into my flesh. The rope is threaded through a metal ring in the post meant for typing horses up. I can’t move. “Damn beast!” The woman, my mother shouts, bringing the horses whip down upon me again. My back feels like it’s on fire.

I hear the whip go back in the air again. I wait to for the pain of the hit. “You should never have been born, spawn of Satan!” Crack! I press myself into the post to remain standing. I do not want to show weakness.

Silent tears escape my eyes.

I wake up with a start. I feel dirty unclean; I slip out of the bed, leaving Cassie alone and enter the ensuite. I’m shirtless and still wearing my jeans from today. I look at myself in the mirror. My hair is sticking out everywhere, the result from thrashing about in my sleep most likely. There’s a bag under my eyes and there’s sweat running down my back. I turn the shower on and immediately climb in and feel the cold water washing over me.

I run a hand through my soaked hair, sighing as the cold water runs down my back. My jeans are soaked through but I don’t care. I continue to gaze at the shower head and watch the water rain down on me.

I know the scars from the whippings are still there but they are not noticeable. I don’t know if anyone knows they are there.

I rarely made a long term covenant with anyone, then I seen Cassie. It wasn’t her soul that I was drawn to. For once, I seen the person under the glowing of their soul. Most demons though, would have been attracted to her, because her soul is unique. Other souls have their own unique colour which they remain but Cassie’s looks as if it is a living organism, with actually moving colours of light.

I rarely notice her soul, I’m too busy looking at the girl behind the glow. A girl whose brave and beautiful. She should be scared of me, yet she finds comfort in my presence.

I stride out of the ensuite with a towel around my neck and another around my waist from where I had removed my drenched jeans.

I dress into a pain of ripped jeans and a random jumper.

I slip on my combat boots and a leather jacket. I glance over at Cassie’s sleeping form and approach her. I lean in close to her, she smells like vanilla and almonds. I kiss her cheek lightly. “Protego.” I whisper, I can feel the glow of my eyes as the spell takes place, forming a thin but strong barrier between Cassie and myself.

I turn my back on her and leave the building. I climb into my Camaro and start the engine. It starts with a roar, which sounds far too loud in the silence of the night but I need to sort this out.

I swerve the car out of its parking space between two abandoned haulage trailers.

I didn’t expect this to my brothers sort of scene, so I’m a little taken aback when I find him at a bar. He slams his pint of beer down and stares at me. “What do you want?” Theo snaps.

To be honest I don’t know why I suddenly wanted to find him. Something was pulling me towards my brother, a pain in the backside that he is. He looks at me with his cold, uncaring eyes. The same eyes that watched me be beat every day until I couldn’t stand.

The same person who never tried to intervene.

The one, who was loved, is also the most uncaring.

I sit down beside him on a stool and order a whiskey. I’m going to regret this. “Decided I’d come out for a drink.”

Theo scoffs at this, even he can see through my lie.  “Don’t feed me that crap, Lucca.” He snarls, taking another mouthful of his beer.

The bartender then sits my whiskey down infront of me and raises his eyebrows. Theo always had an animalistic growl which was how he got his way when we were younger. Not that I ever did. I chew at my lip and stare at the amber coloured substance in the glass.

I wait until the bartender is out of shot before I speak again. “I might need your help.”

Theo just raises an eyebrow and stares at me as if I grew an extra head. “Help? For what?”

“Cassie.” It’s the simplest answer, it’s the only answer. I have to keep her alive, I don’t even know what I did before I met her anymore. I think I just existed but I wasn’t really living either. However, I also have a promise to keep. An unbreakable deal, we are bound for all eternity.

“Now, brother. I thought you knew what to do with a woman in bed.” He replies, I glare at him. He is a pervert if I ever met one! I had forgot for a moment Theo’s usual scene is strip clubs and brothels. He has no respect for anyone.

“Be an asshole, Theo, I don’t care.” I snarl. “You’re the most uncaring, hateful creature I have ever met.” I gulp down my whiskey and stand up off my chair. “I’ll remember not to seek you for help ever again.”

I stand up to leave. I can feel his eyes on my back, it’s like I been touched with ice. “You must have a death wish, helping that girl.” He mutters, he knows I can hear him. I don’t answer. I don’t need to, I’d give my life for Cassie.  “He’s stronger than you, Luc!”

I push the bar door open. The cold morning air seeking out any bare skin not covered by my clothes. I shiver a little as I watch the sun rise in the distance. That’s one thing about this town. It’s suited to the supernatural.

When I get back Cassie has just woke up, her hair a complete mess. She sighs as she sees me walk into the room, abandoning my car keys in a small dish among her make up. Why she wears it I don’t know, I think she looks fine without it.

She tucks a stray hair behind her ear, and looks her phone. I watch her as I sit opposite her on the mattress. She’s small and human, but everything she does. Every little breath to me is beautiful and to be admired. I never felt this about another human. She doesn’t move slowly to me, it’s as if she’s capable at moving at my demonic speed. Even if I know she can’t.

I can hear her fingers tapping on the screen of her phone, a small smile appearing on her face. She glances at me then back at her phone screen “Nope.” She says to herself, while shaking her head. I raise an eyebrow at her in question. She turns her phone round to answer and there is they classical Hollywood demon which looks nothing like the real thing.

The closest ones are always going to be the ones that look identical to humans because we are.

I think that’s one of the reasons she fascinates me. She isn’t afraid of me, in fact I think she’s scared to be without me now. I know it’s because I’m her only form of protection but I wish it wasn’t.

I wished she was just scared of losing me for another reason.

 A matter of the heart.
