"There are some things you can never get back, no matter how much effort you put in. And there are some feelings of despair, that you can never ever shake off."

~ Ciel Phantomhive, Black Butler

Chapter 1

We all know that peaceful space of time between sleep and consciousness. Imagine living in a world that is constantly like that; imagine how amazing that would feel. I suppose the reason the world isn’t like that is because we wouldn’t realise just how beautiful it is.

I believe it can also be said for a person’s perspective of themselves. We look at ourselves every day of the week, in mirrors, silverware and every other shiny surface out there, so of course we aren’t going to realise just how beautiful we are. I never felt like I was anything worth looking at. However, for everyone out there in this world right now this isn’t true. Always believe in yourself because if you can’t, who can?

I’m thinking this as I sit in Lucca’s car listening to his Green Day collection. He’s staring intently at the red light, tapping his fingers against the steering wheel.  I wonder how boring the human world must be to him, how basically nothing interesting or fun happens in people’s everyday lives. I suppose he finds great interest in technology though.

I look at my reflection in the mirror; I’d consider myself to be rather plain looking in comparison to other girls. My face is framed by my long dark hair. The most interesting thing about me though is my eyes. One is a pale blue but the other, my right one, is an exact match of Lucca’s. We both have matching feather tattoos on our necks and a matching rib tattoo as well. The signs of our covenant.

“Cassie, did you hear a single word I said?” Lucca asks, snapping his fingers in front of my face.

I flush. “No, I was thinking.” I steal a glance at him. He looks calm but I suspect he’s mentally calling me an air head or… most likely worse than that. I hope he keeps his thoughts to himself though.

“Well, listen a bit more while you do that.” He sighs, “What I said was, I want to see a friend of mine. He might know something about this Angel of Death.” That’s what the media started calling the man who killed my parents. “Actually, I kind of suspect him to be the Angel. However, it isn’t his style.”

It takes me a moment to work out exactly what this friend is. “You want me to meet another one of you? Luc, I think you forget that I only have one soul!” He winces like I kicked him. God, what’s wrong with him? He wants it as payment!

“We only ask for payments if it’s a human who wants our help. We also don’t ask for payment if it’s just an answer to a question the human wants.” Lucca begins to look impatient and begins to glare at the red light. “You have actually heard of my friend before. He was a wanted murderer in England over a century ago.”

I frown. Why is he blunt one moment and then avoids the topic completely the next? This man makes no sense to me what so ever. Finally the red light turns to green and Lucca speeds off to the outskirts of town.

We stop outside an old abandoned bungalow which is falling into ruin. The roof has collapsed into the house years ago. Demons like such strange places. Thank god Lucca is as close to normal as he can be. Lucca is that tall he has to duck to enter the building. The moment I enter he wraps his arm around my shoulder. I cover my nose instantly, the room actually stinks of a rotting corpse or what I imagine one to smell like anyway.

“Jack!” Lucca calls into the dark room. There’s a shuffling from the corner of the room. I inch towards Lucca, suddenly grateful for his arm. A tall figure appears in the dim light. My first instinct was to retch. I at least had found the cause of the smell. The man grinned at me toothlessly, but that wasn’t what made me want to run screaming. It was the fact that his skin was sagging, was grey and green in patches.

“Lucca! It’s been a long time since I seen you. And who is this beautiful friend of yours?” He asks, reaching a hand towards me. I actually screamed. There was no skin his hand at all; I was looking at yellowing bones and tissue. I was that horrified tears where streaking down my cheeks as I struggled to get away. Lucca in another hand was standing like a statue and quiet literally holding me in place. “Is she a gift?”

“No, she’s in a covenant with me.” Lucca states, his face is contorted in disgust. Clearly, Lucca isn’t a fan of walking corpses either. “I came here to ask you something.” This sparks the corpse’s attention. “Have you heard about the murderer being named The Angel of Death? If so do you know anything about him?”

The corpse stares at Lucca for a moment. “I have heard of this killer. But for the information, I want you to do me a favour.”

“What kind?”

“End my suffering, kill me Lucca.” Lucca nods instantly.

“I will, no need for you to live like this. But I won’t if I know your lying.” The gold in Lucca’s eyes begin to glow. He stared intently at the creature before us.

“You never were one for just trusting someone not to lie to you. Just so you know girlie, that glow means he’s using his powers.” His voice literally hurt as he spoke. It sounded like someone scraping a knife and fork together. “The humans have named him correctly, he is an Angel of Death. Just so the girlie knows, that’s a fallen angel. Nasty creatures, make us demons look like kittens playing with a lion. This particular one really hates humans, targets families. He fell a few centuries ago. He’s a very cruel creature, makes death painful.”

“What killed my parents was too evil to an angel.” I growl. An angel is a pure, good creature not evil. They are divine and holy.

“Lucifier was once an angel child.” The corpse simply states. “I’m sorry Lucca but that is all I know. I know how you feel about humans Lucca. It was a wonder you didn’t drag me into Scotland Yard and yell ‘here’s your Jack The Ripper now dispose of him!’ I know I disgusted you my friend. However, I am grateful.”

Lucca let me go and stepped towards the man. “I hope you find peace, wherever and whatever death has in store for you.” He looks over his shoulder at me. “Cassie, look away.” I obey, looking into the darker corners of the room as there is a sickening crack.

A few hours later Lucca pulls up beside a bar in the town centre. It’s beginning to get dark now. The sun had long ago disappeared but the sky was still pink behind the dark outlines of the buildings. I climb out of the car and follow Lucca into the pub. People look up as we enter but quickly resume whatever they were doing.  I take his hand and let him lead me to the bar, where he orders our food and champagne. “To an old friend.” He whispers, knocking glasses with an invisible man with an invisible glass. In that moment I realised Lucca was more than just a demon, he was also human who felt the same emotions that I do. Then he took a large mouthful of champagne.
