I couldn't believe it. I finally had her. Jordan Emery was finally mine, and I was ready to shout it from the rooftops. After four years, four long, crazy, difficult years, I could finally say that I had crossed the line between love and hate. I was ready for whatever life had to throw at us, as long as I had Jordan by my side.
"It's sweet how close you two are."
A familiar voice caused Jordan to jump away from me in shock. I stepped in front of her protectively.
"Piss off, Hunter," I spat, taking a step backward, which made Jordan take a step back as well. This reminded me of the time Jordan first met Hunter, and I wanted to turn around to make sure he hadn't brought any minions with him. "Get out of here."
Hunter ignored me, turning toward Jordan with a smirk. "Miss me?"
She didn't reply, and I could feel her shivering behind me. "Don't you get anywhere near her," I threatened, taking another step back.
He shoved his hands into the pockets of his suit, making me wonder how long he's been here. Was he in the prom? He looked dressed for it. Not to mention he did look like a student. He could've snuck in easily. How often was he around when I didn't know it?
"I've got to say it took you two some time," Hunter kept the smirk on his face, nodding as he walked closer to me. "I thought you both were going to stay clueless for the rest of your lives. Four years it's been, correct? That's a long time to be oblivious..."
"Get out of here," I repeated with a glare. I was so angry at myself for relying on Hunter to talk to about my girl troubles. What had I been thinking? How had I believed that this wouldn't come back and bite me?
"Nuh-uh, not yet," his smirked turned into a grin, and I didn't like where this was heading. "I need to have a little talk with Jordan."
"You won't go anywhere near her," I said raucously, holding her behind me. "You need to just get out of here before I kick your ass."
Hunter shook his head, taking his hands out of his pockets and crossing his arms over his chest. "Just one dance, Jesse. Don't tell me you're that possessive of her that you won't let her dance with another man," he smirked once more, narrowing his eyes.
"If you were Alex or Ryan, that'd be fine," I said through clenched teeth. He made it seem like it the two of them dancing would be normal. There was no way I was letting him near her. "But you're the psychopathic killer that murdered her grandmother."
"Ow, Jesse," Hunter feigned, placing a hand over his non-existing heart. "Words can hurt."
"Get out of here," I said for a third time.
"Just one dance," he continued to press on, holding up his index finger. "I just want one dance with your pretty little girlfriend. It's the prom, isn't it. It seems that her prom experiences haven't been very great with the looks of it. So why not let her have a little fun?"
"Not with you," I spat. Jordan stepped out from behind me and came up next to me. I looked at her with wide eyes, but she just rolled her own. I could tell she had been getting tired of our fighting.
"I'll go dance with him," Jordan said. I looked at her if she was insane. She was actually considering dancing with the man who killed someone she cared about? She just gave me a pointed look and continued speaking. "Just one dance. Come on, what's he going to do with all those people at the prom there? I'll be fine, I promise. Just go back to your cabin and I'll be there when the song ends."
I was about to argue about how terrible of an idea that was, but she gave me a look that made me keep my mouth shut. I let out a sigh, saying, "you better be at my cabin in ten minutes. If you're not, I'm coming and looking for you."
She smiled, standing on her toes and pressing her lips to mine softly. We pulled away far too quickly, making me frown. "Deal. Now go or the prom will end."
I rolled my eyes, shooting one last look at Hunter before heading back to Cabin B. As I was walking, I couldn't help but look back a few times, but they hadn't moved a single step closer to the prom. That made me extremely nervous. They were talking. Just like two casual friends. It wasn't right. Hunter the psychopath and my girlfriend. Why did she willingly say shed dance with him?
As I entered the cabin, I began pacing back and forth for a few minutes before just falling back on my bed, waiting for Jordan to return. All I was doing was counting the seconds, wanting her to open the door and tell me she was okay. With Hunter, you never knew what could happen. Especially since he had made it clear to me that he hated me and wanted me dead, I couldn't help but worry.
Not to mention I never actually saw them entering the prom, so it would have been easier for him to take her. I didn't know where, considering there were people all around, but if anyone could find a way around the crowd, it'd be Hunter. The thought made me sick to my stomach.
For a brief second, I thought about Aimee. It made me feel sick all over again. I had just left her there without even a goodbye. What was wrong with me?
When I started pacing again, I noticed how worried I was acting. I was sure she was fine, and it was just the paranoia that had me stressed out. No one could blame me. If they were in the same situation, they'd be distressed as well.
When I finally heard a knock at the door, I grabbed the handle and pulled it open as fast as I could. It was Jordan. Her hair was a little scraggly along with her dress, but she was fine.
"You scared me," I admitted, grabbing onto her arm and pulling her to my chest. "I thought it was Alex telling me Hunter kidnapped you or something."
"I'm alright," Jordan wheezed, out of breath from running. She wrapped hers arms around my neck as I shut the door. "He... just wanted to dance."
I wasn't sure if she was being completely honest or not, but I didn't push it. It was a hectic day, and I was still in shock from what happened less than thirty minutes ago. She was here with me now, and that's what mattered most.
"I'm glad you're safe," I pulled her away from me, just so I could look at her. My fingers brushed a lock of hair out out of her face before leaning in and kissing her softly. "I would have killed him if he did anything to you. That stupid bastard..."
I wasn't bluffing or pretending that I was just saying that to make her feel better. If Hunter did anything to Jordan, I would have killed him.
"I really wished we could have danced," Jordan sighed, changing the subject. She placed her head on my chest, making me hold her tighter. "But we can't go back to the prom. Dallas and all out friends are there..."
"Yeah," I agreed, furrowing my eyebrows when she said Dallas' name. He still thought she was in love with him, didn't he? Did he think they were together now? Was I going to be the one to have to tell him it was over?
Shaking the thought out of my head, I had an idea. I gave Jordan a grin.
"What?" She asked me, smiling.
"We'll dance right here," I announced, taking her hand as she smiled wider. "This may not be the prom, and there may not be music, but we're still dressed up. So we'll pretend that we're at prom, surrounded by hundreds of sweaty bodies."
She gave me a look of disgust. "You just made me glad that we're not there anymore."
"That was the point."
"We only need each other," she said, putting her head on my chest as she pressed herself against me. "We don't need music or fancy decorations. We just need each other."
We began swaying in the silence, but I couldn't have been happier. I held her tighter against me. All we needed was each other, and we were lucky enough to have the both of us here.
"Couldn't have said it better myself."
