—i hold a sign and i watch the people pass. they are figments in fading dusk. i see you; curled hair glinting beneath a street lamp. you look like an angel. i smile, for one should be thankful to witness such a holy beauty.

you smiled back at me, a lovely stranger. we parted ways and i never forgot you.

i had always wanted to leave. my sign lies bent and cast aside; my pride is much the same. the city lights seem so much colder now as i leave.

today i gather my strength, the image of an angel. the change is too hard to hide.

i paint their hearts red with song, and watch tired eyes come alive again long after sky grows dark. i know you are still here.
today, i wish i had thanked you.

the sadness begins to fade. my pride does not. i stride through the days with bright eyes and shaking hands. today, i wonder if you were ever there.

it rains again. i stand in the crowd as people rush for cover from the storm. i keep my eyes open. today, i am home.

i see you standing in the rain, a lovely stranger with a halo of gold. we parted ways and i didn't forget you. i cross the street but never reach the other side.

i wake up.
