Silence gave their thoughts free rein. Demini's thoughts galloped from one bad place to the other. Pilo's thoughts were stable, and ate of the trough of how to make her happy. He ate away at his options, trying to locate what would soothe her opinion on the situation they were in. Their lack of communication severed their connection. It was cold for Pilo, outside of her good graces. A fear she found happiness in their current life worried him. Shedding the skin of their predicament occupied Pilo's every thought. He hoped she felt the same. Revealing his disdain about who they were, scared Pilo. If she didn't agree, he felt she would feel differently about him. Losing Demini would pain Pilo worse than being cursed. The truth made Pilo uncomfortable, and he struggled to speak it into existence.
"What did she want," Demini asked.
"She wants to help us kill witches," he answered.
"Why would she want to do that?"
"Power...They stand in her way."
"Why would we want to help her?"
"To kill witches."
"What do we get out of it?"
"Less witches."
"So that's it? She wants more power. To get it, there has to be less witches. To get that done, she needs Pilo?"
"She can't have it known that she was involved...It's just like what I'm doing with P.A.C.E. for the Counsel. Apparently I'm becoming the go to man for this type of crap."
"If we keep in the middle of everyone, this won't end good for us."
"None of this will turn out good for us. So many want us dead. I feel that staying in the middle, makes us valuable."
"It's going to make us a target."
"We already are a target. Information is power. Staying in the middle of the information is good for us right now."
"I don't like her."
"I don't either. But if she's to be the new High Priestess, I feel it's good for us to know as much about her as we can. Right now, we don't know anything about the current Priestess. This could be beneficial for us in the long run."
"Getting in between a coven feud could be dangerous."
"It is...but they are in the city. We can't have dark witches living in the city. They're up to no good. And she agreed to teach me about our powers."
"Oh, so now she's your mentor?"
"No, she's not my mentor. She's trading service for service. Don't you want to know more about what we can do? I think she can teach us to ghost walk. No one else is offering that to us."
"That's because no one else is dangling a carrot out in front of us to get what they want."
"Look at how we're living. The Counsel isn't taking care of us. I'm having to have secret meetings to keep our chests dry. The hunters have built up their forces. We need to get stronger. We have to take advantage of every opportunity that we can. I couldn't go on living if you were to get hurt."
"Do what you feel you need to do...For now...I'll agree to this one, but I'm going to give it more thought. If I feel that we need to cut ties...We're going to cut ties."
"Of course, my love. If this doesn't become beneficial, we'll walk away."
When they agreed, she placed her hand on his face. Looking deeply into each other's eyes they shared a smile. They were all they had, and they were happy that way.
