Cold

The first time Karkat stole Dave's cape, it was actually an accident. Karkat had been forcing himself to stay awake for far too long. In his deliriously exhausted state, he had grabbed the nearest blanket-like thing to curl up in. It just so happened to be Dave's cape. Dave hadn't minded that much. It wasn't a big deal.

The second and third time weren't accidents, but Dave didn't confront Karkat about it until the fourth time.

        "Karkles? Karkles, wake up!"
The sleepy troll opened his eyes. "What the fuck do you want now, Strider," he mumbled.
"Why do you keep stealing my cape?"
        "...what?"
"This cape." Dave held up the edge of the red cape Karkat was curled up in. "It's mine."
"Fuck." Karkat rolled over and tried to ignore Dave.
Dave was not having that shit. "Come on Kitkat. I just want to know why you keep taking it."
Karkat sat up. "Does it really matter that much to you."
        "Yes."
        "I was cold."
"Get a fucking blanket," Dave joked. "This is mine."

Karkat did not get a fucking blanket. Several more times, Dave would find Karkat in some random small space. Karkat would be curled up under, tangled in, and even cuddling with his cape. Dave didn't understand why it kept happening, though he was sure Karkat had a reason. It didn't really bother him, he was just curious. Also, it was fun to tease Karkat about it. The two had gotten in to many playful arguments over the situation. Karkat had many excuses for stealing the cape, from "I thought it was a blanket," to "I have no idea how this got here."

Then they got to the somefuckdredth time. Dave was in a bad mood that day, due to a particularly nasty argument with Rose. He didn't even bother talking to Karkat. He just yanked the cape out of the small troll's grip.
"Stop stealing my fucking cape you worthless asshole," he snarled to a very surprised Karkat.

He immediately regretted it the next day.
        "Karkat?"
"What the hell do you want, Strider?" He sounded almost sad. Dave already felt bad for being mean earlier, but the way Karkat's voice sounded, combined with the fact that he clearly hadn't slept at all in what was probably more than twenty-four hours since then, just made Dave feel worse.
        "Karkat, I'm sorry?"
"Sorry for what? You took back something that was yours. I'm sorry for stealing it, I guess."
Dave was somewhat confused. What was Karkat so upset about? This wasn't like him.
"I'm sorry for being mean about it."
"Why would you be sorry about that?" Karkat snapped. "It's not like you're the first person to realize I'm a piece of shit."
Dave had thought he couldn't feel any worse about this. He'd thought wrong. He realized he had actually hurt Karkat's feelings, which was a pretty difficult thing to do. He felt something break inside as Karkat turned away from him.
        "Karkat-"
"Just go away, Strider. You were right. I'm worthless. I was stupid to think you'd be different than anyone else. I push everyone away and then get upset when I get hurt. So thanks for putting me in my place." And with that, the small troll stormed off.
In that moment Dave knew, beyond any doubt, that he had fucked up. But he had fought with friends before, so why did he feel so awful for hurting Karkat? It dawned on him slowly. It was a realization that had been building up inside him slowly for quite a while.
He had come to like the small angry troll.
No, he had ended up accidentally falling for him.

It took a while for Dave to find Karkat again, but Karkat seemed to have calmed down a bit by the time he did.
        "Karkat, I'm sorry. I didn't mean what I said."
Karkat sighed. "Whatever. It's... It's nothing."
        "It's not nothing. I was a jerk. I really didn't mean it."
"It's fine, Dave. I'll stop stealing your cape."

It didn't take long for the boys to get sick of being upset with each other and just pretend like it never happened. Mostly because there wasn't much else to do besides go back to playfully bothering each other. But Dave never forgot that realization he'd had. And Karkat never stole Dave's cape. Until...

It had happened unexpectedly one night. They were wrestling with each other. One slip of his hand, and Dave was suddenly nose to nose with Karkat. The kiss was an impulsive one, and Dave pulled away as soon as he'd realized what he'd done.
"Shit... Karkat, I'm sorry. I got carried away and-"
He was cut off by grey lips pressing against his own. When they separated again, Karkat practically ripped off Dave's sunglasses.
        "I love you too, idiot."
Dave wasn't sure what surprised him more; the fact that this was actually happening, or the fact that Karkat hadn't reacted at all to his unusual eye colour. Being surprised didn't last long though, because it took him about half a second to decide he didn't care at all.

The next night, Dave found Karkat curled up in one of the odd places Karkat fell asleep in. The troll was shivering and mumbling something in his sleep. Dave smiled and took off his cape.
"Goodnight, Karkles." He gently covered his friend with the cape.
Karkat curled up in Dave's cape, as usual, and soon his shivers became purrs of content.

Eventually, Dave did get Karkat to stop stealing his cape.
But only because he'd finally figured out why Karkat had been stealing the cape in the first place, and figured out how to fix it.
Karkat was happier sleeping in Dave's arms anyway.
