Authors Note: Soulmate AU in which everyone has a timer in their wrist that counts down until they meet their soulmate. This is also a human AU, obviously.
Trigger Warning; Violence. Sort of sad, but there's a happy ending.

Two days, four hours, sixteen minutes, forty-five seconds. That's what the clock on Karkat Vantas' wrist now read. He was beginning to grow excited. Of course, who wouldn't be excited knowing that they were only days away from meeting someone they've waited their whole life to meet. He smiled as he watched the seconds tick down. Still, his excitement didn't change his usual demeanor. If it hadn't been for the timer, no one would have known how close he was, except for the fact that he was smiling a little bit more than usual.
As he went through his day at school, he began to wonder what his soulmate could be like. Would it be a guy or a girl? Karkat didn't particularly care which one it was, but he was curious. He just hoped whoever it was would be a nice person. There was one thing he couldn't stand, and that was bullies. He didn't think he'd be able to put up with a brute of a soulmate.
His curiosity made him impatient. Two more days. He kept reminding himself of that. He'd waited fifteen years, he could handle two more days. Couldn't he?

One day, two hours, five minutes, thirty-three seconds. Dave Strider had never paid much attention to the timer on his wrist. Was there a point? Maybe there was. Maybe his soulmate could help him. Or maybe not. What kind of person would be okay with their soulmate being a seventeen-year-old runaway? He figured it could be worse. At least he wasn't a dropout. He'd run away from his asshole of a brother only a few weeks ago, and so far had managed to go unnoticed at school. He doubted that would last long, though. Without somewhere to live, he'd be back under his brother's shadow soon. He sighed, trying to think of a way out of this. He glanced at the timer again. He didn't care about soulmates. Fuck that. With his luck, even his soulmate would reject him. He'd heard tons of stories about soulmates separating because they were incompatible in this life. Either that, or his soulmate would die before they met. The timer would stop, and within three years, he'd slowly be driven to suicide. It was a very negative way to think, but it was all he could consider. Annoyed at the thought, he awkwardly tied a piece of dark cloth over the timer. He was better off not knowing. His hands found his only possession, hidden in the pocket of his red hoodie. A small knife. If worst came to worst...

Two minutes. Two minutes! Karkat grinned with excitement as he glanced at the timer. He was walking home from school. Maybe he'd run in to his soulmate on the street? There were lots of people around. What did his soulmate look like? A minute now. He was getting nervous. What if he and his soulmate were incompatible? What if his soulmate didn't like him? All the "What ifs" raced through his head as the seconds ticked down while he walked.

Suddenly, someone grabbed Karkat, pulling him in to a dark alley. He felt a knife stab in to the side of his neck, and gasped in pain as he was pushed back against a wall. The person holding him was a stranger. A mop of blond hair, mirror shades, and a bandanna over the rest of his face.
"Your money, or your life- oh shit! No!"
~
Dave hadn't intended to stab the boy. He ripped off the bandanna, quickly pulling out the knife and pressing the ragged cloth over the wound.
"Fuck! Fuck, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to- Oh my god... lay down!" He gently lowered the heavily bleeding boy to the ground. "I didn't mean to actually hurt you, I just needed the money..."
"It's okay..." The boy mumbled, his voice already growing weak. There were tears in his grey eyes, which were mostly hidden by his somewhat messy dark brown hair. Dave couldn't help but think that if he hadn't been dying, he would have been cute. This situation hurt his heart in ways he didn't understand.
        "Just... stay alive, okay?!"
The boy smiled painfully, showing Dave his wrist. The timer was at zero, and slowly fading. Which meant he'd met his soulmate... only seconds ago. The pain in Dave's heart suddenly made sense as he uncovered his own timer, and realized it was exactly the same.
"No!" Dave cried. "No! No! God fucking damn it, no! I HATE THIS UNIVERSE!"
The boy slowly reached out, weakly grabbing Dave's hand. "At least... we met once... I'm Karkat..."
Dave took a slow, shuddering breath. "I'm Dave..."
"I waited so long..." Tears were spilling down Dave's face as Karkat spoke.
        Dave sobbed. "I'm sorry..."
Karkat sat up a little, hissing in pain, and gave Dave a gentle kiss. Dave was too upset to do anything but hold Karkat's hand as the small boy slowly bled out.
"What have I done..." He muttered to himself, picking up the dropped knife. "I'm sorry..." He picked up the knife, and slit his throat.

A lifetime later, two girls meet by chance in a dark back alley. One has grey eyes and dark brown hair. The other, red eyes and blonde hair. They smile as old memories come back and their timers hit zero. The grey eyed girl makes a finger gun with one hand and points it at the other girl.
        "Your money, or your life."
"You can have my heart, if you want?" The other girl offers, smiling.
        "Deal."
