Authors Note: Werewolf AU

Omega Karkat Vantas thought he could put up with anything. For most of his life he'd been beaten, pushed around, snarled at, starved, and abused. Both his wolf form and his human form were scrawny, and he was almost always hurt in some way. Karkat was naturally aggressive, and thought he could deal with whatever the world could throw at him.
But one night, when he strayed too far from the pack, he learned he was wrong.
In his form as a grey wolf that was almost sickly thin, he'd wandered to the edge of his pack's territory. He was unsure why. Maybe he'd just wanted to get away from his cruel fellow pack members. But whatever the reason, a strangely enticing scent caught his attention. His ears perked up, listening. Someone was was nearby. Someone who wasn't in the pack. He growled, but his heart wasn't in it. He hated his pack, and it wasn't like he'd be able to hold his ground in a fight. He was surprised when he saw a white head poke out of the bushes.
        "Who are you?" Karkat growled.
The white wolf gracefully slipped out from his hiding place, and approached Karkat calmly. There was something about the way the other wolf's red eyes, and how they gleamed in the full moon's light, that Karkat found incredibly distracting.
"My name's Dave," the white wolf said. His voice was very relaxed. "Why the hell aren't you chasing me off your pack's land? Not that I want you to or anything. I'm just confused."
Karkat flicked his ears in annoyance. "Why should I care if you're on our land or not? I'm too weak to fight you off anyway."
"Yeah. Man, you're practically skin and bones. Do you even eat?"
"Not much," Karkat muttered, "but that's none of your business."
        "Omega?"
        "Yeah... what are you?"
Dave's tail lifted. "I'm an Alpha."
Karkat yipped in surprise and bowed his head submissively. Why hadn't he recognized the scent of an Alpha wolf?!
The albino wolf nudged Karkat. "Sorry. I shouldn't have said anything. Seriously though, your pack sucks. Even Omegas deserve to be treated decently."
        "Nice try."
Dave tilted his head. Karkat couldn't help bout notice how the moonlight made Dave almost look like he was glowing. How was this wolf so attractive? He shook his head to clear away those thoughts. He couldn't let himself think like that. Especially about an Alpha.
"An Alpha wouldn't understand what it's like. Your pack is probably just as bad." Karkat knew he could be killed for saying something like that, but he didn't care. There was something about Dave that made him feel... safe?
Dave shook his head. "My pack is really small."
        "How small?"
        "Just me."
        Karkat growled. "Oh, you asshole!"
The other wolf laughed. Karkat turned to walk away.
"Please don't go," Dave whined. "Stay for a while. No one ever talks to me."
Karkat huffed. "Fine." He returned to the white male and sat by him.
Dave's tail wagged as he sat down. "You're a cute little thing," he teased.
        "I'm not little!" Karkat snapped.
        "Smaller than me," Dave replied.
        "Shut up," he growled.
Dave lunged forward, playfully tackling Karkat. "Make me!"
"Get off you fucking jerk!" Karkat yelped.
Dave laughed and let Karkat get up. "You know, your scent is really sweet."
"Shut up," Karkat growled. He was beginning to feel nervous. Why was he attracted to this asshole?! And worse, why... why did this asshole seem to be attracted to him.
Dave's tail wagged. "It's almost funny. I've never met an Omega as angry as you." He nudged Karkat playfully.
"Well I've never met a rouge as confident as you," Karkat replied.

The two laid there, talking, until the sun began to rise. By now, Karkat had put all the pieces together. How Dave made him smile, even while making jokes about him. How he was so attractive, and his scent was so intoxicating. It shouldn't have been possible, but... it seemed like he and the white wolf were destined to be mates. It was a realization that kind of scared him.
"Karkat?" Dave startled him out of his thoughts.
        "Hm?"
"Why do you stay with your pack if you hate them so much?"
Karkat shook his head. "I'd never make it on my own."
        "What about with me?"
        That offer surprised Karkat. "Really?"
"Yeah. Um..." Dave's eyes dropped. He seemed embarrassed. "The truth is I've been following you and your pack for a few days now. I think you're supposed to be my mate. I wanted to just run in and stop them from hurting you, but I knew that would get me killed."
Karkat tried to shake off his shock. He stood up and nuzzled the white wolf. "I think you're right about us being mates. If you want me to join you, I'd honestly be happy to leave my pack."
As the sun rose, the two boys shifted back in to their human forms.
"So you'll stay with me?" Dave asked, offering Karkat his hand.
Karkat nodded. His fingers fit perfectly in to the spaces between Dave's. Together, the two boys wandered away in to the forest and the rising sun.
