CHAPTER 8 (Emma’s P.O.V)
It was 7 in the evening and I was supposed to meet the twins at this bonfire thing at 8. I was still in my clothes from earlier today and I finally got up off my butt and went to take a shower. I decided to just throw on a pair of jeans shorts, cropped band tee and paired it with some flip flops. I thought I’d let my hair fall naturally around my face. I when downstairs and kissed dad before I headed out.
I was not looking forward to tonight. I walked along the shoreline in the direction of the flickering bonfire in the distance. The sky was getting dark as the sun was setting. I saw the twins waving in my direction as I approached the party. “Hey! I thought you were gonna stand us up. I’m so glad you didn’t.” Sara said while giving me friendly hug. “Yeah I can tell you’re thrilled to be here.” Peter said laying on the sarcasm pretty thick while crushing me a huge bear hug. “Don’t take it to heart, I never come to these kinda things. It’s not really my scene.” I said standing it between the two awkwardly. “Well don’t worry you’ve got us so let go have some fun!” Peter said cheerfully. The three of us made our way to the coolers to get some drinks. I got myself a beer while Sara got some weird concoction of alcohols. Peter started to chat with a bunch of guys, so Sara and I headed over to the bonfire. We sat around the warm fire and I started to observe my surroundings. There people dancing to the music, some were sucking faces at towards the darker side of the party and I noticed most of the girls here were in the skimpiest shorts and tanks I’ve ever seen. I was so engrossed that I didn’t notice Sara talking to me. “Hey Em did you hear what I said?” she repeated herself. “Umm I’m sorry Sara what were you saying?” I ask embarrassed at my zoned out moment. “I said that I was gonna say hi to a few of my friends. Do you wanna come or will you be alright here by yourself?” she said kindly. I told her that I’d be fine on my own. I continued to observe the people around me that I didn’t realize that someone sat down beside me. “Hey.” The person said. His voice sounded oddly familiar for some reason. I was about to reply but when I turned and realized who it was, my expression completely changed. “What do you want now?” I asked Adam coldly. “Woah what’s with the attitude? Are you still pissed about what happened this morning? Look I’m really sorry about that, I was a jerk.” He sounded genuinely sorry about it. “Jerk would be an understatement. You know what its fine. Let’s just drop it okay? I gotta go. I’ll see you at work.” I said as I got up and walked away. I know I sounded like a bitch but I was really pissed and was not enjoying myself. I decided to take a walk by the shore instead away from the crowd. Just then I bumped into someone by accident. “Watch where you’re going weirdo!” someone in screeched a high pitched voice. I looked up to find the one and only queen bitch, Jessica Hunt standing in front of me in a dress that was missing pretty much all its fabric. It was a see-through number that stopped right below her ass and you could see her neon pink micro-mini bikini on the inside. “I’m sorry but I’m sure you’ll live.” I rolled my eyes and started to walk away. I’ve known Jessica pretty much my whole high school life. You know that one first class bitch that is set on making your life a living hell if you cross her. Yup that’s Jessica Hunt in a nutshell. She has not been a fan of me but she’s never really paid much attention to me either. Not until tonight that is. “Hey Emma what are you doing here anyway? You’re the last person I’d expect to see. This isn’t one of your part time jobs is it?” she said snidely. I thought I’d ignore her and just walk away but she decided to drain her bottle of beer down my shirt. “Oops! I didn’t see you there. Oh well I’m sure you’re used to it anyways.” She said proudly. I was so shocked and embarrassed but did my best to hide it as I turn on my heel and began to walk away. “Jessica what the heck is your problem?!” I heard Adam roar out from behind me. I turn to see Adam in front of Jessica looking really pissed. “Chill babe why are you getting all worked up? It was just for fun.” Jessica said in a whiney voice. “Let’s go get me another drink and you can be mad at me some more.” She continued seductively. Adam backed away from her and said with a low voice, “Give it up Jess. We’re over and you’re a complete bitch you know that.” And he walked towards me, grabbed my hand and pulled me away with me. I didn’t get a chance to see Jessica’s reaction but I’m guessing it wouldn’t be a pretty sight.
Adam pulled me with him till we were a pretty good distant away from the party. “Umm... Adam you can let go of me now.” I said as I looked at him sigh heavily and let go of my hand. “I’m sorry about what Jessica did to you. She’s a real bitch.” He looked at me and I could see that really felt bad about what had happen back there. “It’s really not a big deal. Girls like that are just too damn insecure for their own good. You didn’t need to defend me back there. I’m used to her shit and I prefer ignoring it.” I told him as we continued walking along the shore. “You know most girls would just say thank you and think I’m their knight in shining armor.” He laughed at me. Then I realized once again I was with the jerk Adam. “Well sorry to burst your bubble but I’m not any girl much less one of those Adam, crazed, hormonal teenage girls who seems to be attracted to you. I don’t need a guy or anyone for that matter to fight my battles or defend me in any way. So no thank you for what you did back there and I’ve gotta go get beer off of me. Bye Adam.” I replied harshly to him and started walking away but I didn’t get very far because he grabbed my arm and pulled me back to face him. “What are you doing?!” I shouted at him. He looked slightly hurt and angered by what I had said to him. “Okay look here Emma for the last time I’m really sorry for going off on you like a huge jackass this morning. I really am and I’m sorry for what I said about being a knight in shining armor, I was just kidding about that. I’m not trying to do anything; I just didn’t like how Jessica was treating you. Heck I just don’t like her period. When I saw tonight I just wanted to clear the air between us since we are gonna be working together for the next 3 months. That’s all.” He went on for what seem like forever. After everything he had said I kinda felt like I was the jerk now for going off on him like a canon just a minute ago. I sighed heavily and just collapsed on the sand. “Listen I kinda lost it a moment ago and it wasn’t right for me to go off on you like that. It’s fine let’s just forget about this whole thing alright and go about our business.” I looked up at him from where I was sitting and gave him a smile. He nodded. “Yeah deal but you do realize that we’re gonna be working together so it’s gonna be ‘our’ business.” He gave me a boyish smirk. I laughed and stood up while dusting off sand from my butt. I turned away and started heading back in the direction of my house. “Hey where are you going? The party’s that way.” I heard Adam say. I laughed, “I’m heading home. I wasn’t kidding when I said I needed to go get this beer off of me.” I could hear his footsteps catching up with mine. “Let me walk you home then.” He said falling in tow with me. I stopped and turned towards him, “I’ll be fine. You can head back to the party. I’ll see you at work.” I started jogging away from him. “But-…” “Goodnight Adam.” I cut him off and continued jogging towards my house.
When I reached home dad was the living room watching some sports. I kissed him and told him I was going to bed. Thank God he hadn’t notice I smelled like beer since he was so immersed with the game. I got to my room and stripped out of my clothes and immediately hit the showers. I had a nice long hot shower and got all that nasty beer off of my body. After my shower I changed into one of dad’s old huge shirt and a pair of boy shorts and lay in bed. As I drifted off to sleep, I realized that Adam wasn’t a huge jerk. He was still a jerk but not as bad anymore.
