Rustic bars always made me feel at home. The big city life could become tiresome at times so I was happy that Sammy's Place was there to give me some nostalgia of rural life. Hidden between two apartment complexes, this bar was one I would often venture to on Saturday nights. When I wasn't out on duty or generally dealing with the stresses of being an adult, I came here to get partially shitfaced. After all, this place felt like it was made for me...like it was specifically my place...Samantha's Place.
My main purpose of getting shitfaced tonight was to forget about a certain someone. A someone who made my heart skip a beat and made my face flush a bright rouge hue. Today I had made a complete and utter fool of myself in front of Rafael Barba.
Before transferring to Special Victims Unit, I worked at Vice. They always made me do desk work because they thought I would be too emotional for the job. I really think they just wanted me gone so they wouldn't get in trouble for sleeping with the prostitutes and using the drugs themselves. I didn't have the best partners for detectives; I didn't feel like their partner at all really. My boss was even worse. He regularly took bribes from pimps so that we would focus our attention on a more important investigation.
Needless to say I was extremely happy to get out of there. IEB eventually caught up with them, and I was found innocent of any crimes. Tucker pulled me aside during his investigation and said off the record that I should put in to transfer to Manhattan Special Victims Unit. Three months later I was officially apart of the team. In the beginning I mainly had desk work, but as time passed I was out there with Fin as my partner.
Yesterday I was able to go to a court room for the first time in my whole detective career. I had never been in a courtroom before so my emotions ended up getting to me. While the defendant was up on the stand lying his ass off, I yelled at Barba to do something. In my mind, Barba was letting that guy walk all over him and the victim. The judge did not like my outburst at all and warned me that if I were to say anything else that I would be thrown out of the courtroom. I sat back down and sunk low in my seat.
After the trial Barba came up to me and yelled at me, "If you cannot control yourself, I will make sure you get sent back to Vice!"
Having a sort of affection for the ADA, I blushed immensely. I had not know him long, but every time I saw him I could not help but stumble over my words. I knew there was no chance in hell he had liked me back. We maybe had one or two full conversations, and I was probably just some dumb rookie to him. He was constantly on my mind when I was not thinking about work, but he probably did not even know my name.
Tonight I was going to get over him. I was going to get wasted, have a one night stand, and wake up next to a complete stranger who I hopefully would never see in that bar again.
I walked through the front door and hear a little dinging noise above me. Not many people were in the bar tonight, surprisingly. It was Saturday night after all. Checking my phone I saw that the time read 10:04 p.m. I was probably going to sleep in till 1 p.m. tomorrow. Hopefully I wouldn't have to wake up and come into work tomorrow. I requested the day off. Lieutenant Benson clearly wanted to ask why, but her morals told her that it was not the best idea. I told her that if she honestly absolutely needed me I would come in. She just shook her head and told me not to worry about it.
"Detective Monroe?" I heard on oddly familiar voice.
I turned my head.
FUCK MY LIFE!
Right there in front of me was Rafael fucking Barba in the flesh and blood. The one person I did not want to see showed up the one place I had claimed as my own. Not wanting to be a socially awkward mid-30s adult-woman-child-person-thing, I walked over towards him.
What the fuck are you doing Sami?
"Hey Barba...um...how are you?" I grinned.
You are a fucking idiot Sami.
He replied, "Good. How are you doing?"
Fucking awful.
"I'm good," I laughed nervously.
He said, "Listen-"
"I know," I cut him off, "I fucked up earlier. I'm really sorry about that. I was just so emotional. I never got to do much of anything other than desk work at my last job. In the moment I did not realize that I was shouting in a courtroom. I totally get if you never want to see me again, but tonight I am going to stay in the bar and have fun. So you can leave if you don't want to see me."
"Actually," he rolled his eyes, "If you had let me finish, you would have known that I don't want to never see you again. I actually wanted to come and find you. I noticed one night that you came in here. I then began to take notice of the fact that this seems to be ritual for you...coming here most Saturday nights. I just wanted to talk to you Detective Monroe. May I do that?"
No. This is going to be awkward. Walk away Sami!
"Sure..."
"Well I wanted to apologize. I should not have snapped like I did. I do not want you going back to Vice. Look, I do not apologize for hardly anything I do or say so I hope you understand that I mean it. I notice how you always stammer and stumbled around me. I know I can be intimidating, but I can promise you I am a nice person...sometimes," said Barba.
"Well thank you. I apologize for my actions. I should not have made a scene."
"Skip the sentiment Detective Monroe. I'll let you get back to your after-hours fun. I'm sure you did not want to see me anyway," he laughed.
C'mon Sami! This could be your only shot at getting to know him!
"Hey Barba?"
"Yeah?"
"Would you like to join me?"
He looked at me with a curious and perplexed look, "You want me to drink with you? I thought you wanted me to leave."
"Well I did," I looked down at my feet, "However, I have changed my mind."
He smirked, "Why?"
He walked closer to me. Taking my hand, he guided me into the back corner of the bar. The mood was much less lively compared to the middle and front of Sammy's. Couples were making out back here, and I was sure one was full on out fucking. I never visited this side because of how the sexual atmosphere was so palpable.
"Is it because you like me?" he asked once we sat in a leather booth.
"I-I don't know what you are talking about."
"Oh I think you do. I know you do. I asked Carisi and he said that you had a crush on me."
"How did he know?" I asked.
"He has had three sisters. Remember? He probably knows when a girl likes someone."
"True...so..."
"Do you want to skip the small talk?" he smirked.
"Barba? What has gotten into you?"
He replied, "You do not want to?"
"I do! I really do! I just never expected this from you."
"Trust me...I am full of surprises..."
