The car back from the hospital is silent. I sit nestled between Akihiko and Ichirou while Hotaka sits in the passenger's sheet with my mother. My legs are carefully placed between the back of the middle rest and my seat, with Ichirou and Akihiko's legs pressed gently against either side of mine to keep them from moving.

"Are you alright?" I whisper to the male on my left in a low whisper. "Your looking kinda pale..."

His eyes barely even brush over me, his gaze accompanied with a mixed look of uncertainty and distrust. "I'm fine."

"Are you sure? I'm just worried that-"

"I said I'm fine." He bites back, returning his look back to outside the window when my mum eyes him from the drivers seat.

I swallow nervous and shrink back into my chair, the only thing supporting me from digging a hole for myself is the reassuring squeeze Ichirou gives my hand. I look up at the brunette and he gives me a slight, sympathetic smile.

"Is Katsumi going to be okay?" My mother asks, the whole ordeal befuddling even her. "I... I'm still finding it hard to believe that that sweet boy..."

"His state will depend on whether you or Chiseki decide to press charges." Hotaka's voice is barely above a whisper, all his energy drained from the past couple days. His head doesn't even move from its place propped up on his palm.

"Well..." My mum trails off. "I'll talk about it with Chiseki. Personally... I don't think I'd be a responsible mother if I didn't see my daughter's attempted murderer punished in some way."

I can basically hear Akihiko's teeth grind at my mother's words. I watch as his fist's clench tighter, I'm astounded as how he doesn't draw draw blood.

"But I am sympathetic towards that boy." My mother adds after a minute passes. "You're all like my sons. Especially Katsumi. You live, eat, sleep in my house and as of this year I have weirdly, yet extremely adapted to seeing you boys off every morning, and then saying goodnight to you as you head off to sleep. I..." Her voice breaks mid-sentence and I can feel my heart do the same. "Katsumi may be grown up but to me he's still just a little boy... I don't know what to do." She hastily brings one hand away from the steering wheel to dab lightly at the fresh tears rolling down her cheeks.

The other boys in the car draw careful breath. I can tell they're also holding in emotions. All four of them had never had a loving mother, and I suppose my mother never had the son she wanted before my father passed away.

Sloughing back into the faux leather of the car seat, I shut my eyes and take deep breaths, praying for this car ride to be a short one.

***

Leaning back into my bed, I exhale a sharp breath as Akihiko less then carefully placed my legs onto my bed so I can lie down.

"Do you want some water?"

"I'm good, thanks."

The tone between us is devoid of emotion.

Barren of any form of both joy or sadness.
