Days after

Whenever Elena could not deal with her feelings she buried herself in work. Work was escape after the death of her parents as well as the death of Stefan. Now, her conflicting feelings that rose up for both Joel and Klaus made her very much confused.

She didn't go to the bar after either. And when she was invited to get along, she excused herself, making out she was tired.

Saying bye for the day, Dr Zach Miller now remarked to both Joel and Maggie-

"I think that the gunshooting patient really got to her."

"Yeah, seems that way."- Joel said-"but somehow it feels that there is something deeper. When we were in New York, she had like this strange mood swing, cutting off the conversation like cutting the flash with a surgical knife. Something really bad must have happened in her life."

"In a span of six months she has lost her parents and her husband"- Maggie now blurted out.

"What?"- Joel looked astonished now remembering Elena's words about losing someone.

"Yeah. She moved here to - heal, I guess. Move on with her life."- Maggie said.

"This explains her being so closed off."- Zach said.

"It does."- Joel said pensively.

Enigma, that was Elena became so much clearer to him now. He remembered a patient he had, whose grief made her go into deep depression.

"Are you ok, Joel?"- Maggie now asked.

"Yeah."- Joel said and now changed being the chirpy-self again-"Let's get that drink."

The next morning, Joel went to find Elena. The nurses had told him that she was in the office.

"Hey, there. Nurse Jackson told me you were here bright and early."

"I was."- Elena replied-"is there anything you want?"

"Ouch. Don't tell me you haven't got five minutes for your favourite colleague of them all?"

"I have to finish these e-mails and then I got to be in the OR-"- Elena looked at the clock-"in fifteen minutes."

"Ok. Two minutes then?"

Elena looked at him slightly annoyed and then said-"Two minutes."

"I - I know that most of us here are the definition of overachievers, but- you are the workaholic of the month- and-"

"What is going on?"- Elena asked.

"I- the way you have this - non-emotional thing, the way you close yourself off and - ok- I think you suffer from emotional numbness, and it is perfectly understandable after the loss you have experienced and the gun shooting victim has put you over the edge."
