To be honest, this ship dosen't really make alot of sense.
In the episode "Hello HellHole", we see that Matt's personal hell is a world were everyone is Edd, so I don't think he'd be dating him any time soon. Yeah their close friends and roommates, but why ship them?
UPDATE: Decided to expand on my opinion.
In the episode "Matt Sucks", the two of them go out on a date because Edd thought that Matt was making advances onto him when he was just trying to drink his blood. Does that make Edd and confirmed bisexual? It depends how canon the episode is, which a lot of it probably isn't considering Matt becomes a literal vampire and this is never addressed again like some other episodes. Now this is obviously a big joke, I think that's very obvious considering the show is of the humour genre, but I do understand why people use this episode to back up the ship, I personally just wouldn't use an episode like that as evidence.
Anything such as the character's hugging each other or standing by each other, I'm not sure about. The only time Edd and Matt have hugged each other has been in fear, and this is a very common thing you'll see in cartoons because it's supposed to get a laugh out of you. You'll see enemies to it, siblings do it, partners do it, and friends do it. This does not mean they have feelings for each other, at the very least it just means that they're scared for their life, at the most it means they care about each other and don't want to die.
People also will tell you that they constantly stand by each other. Of course it makes them close friends, but this doesn't also make them romantically interested. For example, in "The End", you never see the two apart. This is a very common thing throughout the entire series, and it's very rare to see a character alone on screen. But, where exactly is either of them suppose to go? They don't have a reason to be apart that would make sense with the story of the episode in particular, and standing by someone when things are destroyed around you is an act to comfort those you care about and even yourself.
