Over two months ago, P'Boom gathered all the guys in the main activity room of the boys home. He looked stern as he waited for them all to take their seats. It was the usual chaos as they shuffled about and fought over the most comfortable chairs. The younger boys didn't even try, they just sat on the floor or between the legs of their favourite older boy.
"Guys, we have a serious issue we need to talk about."
P'Boom was one of the calmest and kindest people any of them had ever known. His patience was measureless and, he seldom asked them for meetings. His look and tone had their attention.
"I should say first that you know I don't approve of any kind of violence in this house. You've all been very good about that. I'm proud that we don't have many problems like that here. But guys, it has to extend to the outside as well."
Boom put his hands in his pockets and looked at the floor. "I don't know if you boys understand how good we have it here." He turned to one of the older boys. "Nong'Ted can vouch for me when I say, this house is better cared for and has far more luxuries than you would get in any other boys home anywhere."
Ted nodded and chuckled. He smacked his buddy's head. "You're not kidding, I would have come here a long time ago if I knew. You guys are living the life man."
Boom took in a deep breath and ran his eyes over the crowd of young men and their bright faces.
"It's all been threatened, fellas. What happened to Achi was very wrong."
Some of the boys looked confused. It was obvious that not everyone knew what Boom was talking about.
"You know who you are and I need you to come forward."
Boom held up his hand. "Before you even say it. No, it was not Achi that came to me with this. He's not the one that told on you. Guys, there were witnesses, there's no point in trying to hide. I already know who's guilty here, but, I'm giving you the chance to come forward and do the right thing."
No one moved.
"Hmm, Maybe I should tell you what's going to happen if you don't."
The smaller boys who had nothing to fear, and, didn't have a clue what was going on, started to ask.
"What will happen P'?"
Another boy... "Yeah, What P'? Tell us."
"Well guys, tomorrow, I'm going to show you. When you all get back from school, we're going on a road trip."
The little ones were excited and hopping around. Some of the older ones sat puzzled by the whole conversation. Boom had taken them all places before. Amusement parks, swimming at the nearby public pool and sporting events. They took it all for granted. None of them ever thought about who paid for them to get into the pool, who paid for the park, the food and drinks.
Ted spoke up again. "You wouldn't go on any trips if you come from the home I just left, you'd be lucky just to walk around the block."
..........................
It wasn't at all what they'd expected. Some of the younger boys clung to and hid behind the older ones when they were ushered into a large concrete block building. The whole front of the place was paved and there was no backyard at all. It was pressed tight to another tall building that shaded the whole area.
Half of the letters that formed the name over the door had fallen off. The place looked run down and there were even windows broken out on the top floor.
