Portent. When he returned to his office, Task was still very worried about Rejoice. She calmed down before he left her, but clearly, whatever went down between her and Kyle was having an effect on her emotionally and Rejoice was not an emotional person. She used words, mostly from the bible, to express her feelings. She always had a scripture for everything. Task could honestly say he never met anyone who read and loved reading the bible the way she did. So, what in the world does she think she's doing messing around with Kyle Brewster? What a wicked union, he thought, booting up his computer. Task had known her for several years and he still could not believe she was actually dating Kyle Brewster. Of all the asinine things... He shook his head. Rejoice Battle and he were close friends. He'd had Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners with her family and accompanied her to Mrs. Battle's funeral. Task had two biological siblings, but Rejoice was his sister from another mister.

Now he felt like he didn't know her at all. Could she possibly be taken in by this guy? He scrolled absently through his emails. Promise me you will not say anything to him, she had said. He wanted nothing more than to go confront Kyle right then and there. She tried to convince him it had been a bad fling and an awful mistake on her part, but the way she cried was indicative of much more than a fling. Knowing Kyle, he probably had his fun with her and moved on, but the way he looked at her in the DFAC didn't jibe with that theory either. However, Task had seen Kyle in action. The gym was a veritable playground for players like him and he didn't have to do anything but show his face and they came. Black, White, Balkan, Latino and everything else; it did not matter. Females loved some Kyle Brewster and vice versa. Unbeknownst to Kyle, Task counseled several broken-hearted women who named him as the source of their pain.

I should probably just stay out of it, Task reasoned. Grown folks would be grown folks and nobody knew that better than him. But in this case, one of the grown folks involved was Rejoice, which made it difficult to turn a blind eye. She was his girl and her friendship meant the world to him. He would have to give this some more thought, but for now he would just watch and pray...
