Chapter Five

Mackenzie

Today was Monday, and the only thing keeping me from crying is the fact that I get to leave early since I have privilege.

It was only 4th period though, so I walked into my english classroom and sat down in my seat.

What sucked about this class was that both Hayden and Annie were in it. And they sat together.

Behind me.

The whole class I just looked at my desk and thought about things. Until a tap on my shoulder drew me out of my thoughts.

I turned to my right and saw Brandon Rowland. He slyly handed me a piece of paper before quickly reverting his eyes back to the teacher.

The corner of my lips drew up at his childish ways. I opened the note and it read:

Kenzie,
I can tell by the look on your face that you're just as bored as I am.

So he was looking at me?

But what about to make up for this lack of fun, we go see a movie this week?

I glanced at him, but quickly looked away noticing that he was already looking at me.

I scribbled back

sure, text me ***-***-****

before handing it back to him.

I saw a smile appear on his face as he read it. He looked at me and his smiled grew wider as the bell rang.

I grabbed my books and stopped at my locker where Johnny was waiting for me to go to lunch.

"Hey," he said casually leaning up against the lockers next to mine.

"Hey," I said smiling at the fact that he already had my locker open, waiting for me.

I switched my books out for my lunch bag before shutting my locker.

I turned to walk towards the cafeteria with John following. We walked in, and from a distance I could see Hayden and Annie kissing at our table.

I felt John lace his hand into mine, giving me reassurance. We walked to our table, and I slammed my water bottle down causing them to jump.

"Hey guys," Annie said with a smile. If only she knew how much of a jerk her boyfriend was.

Johnny smiled at her while I rolled my eyes and sat down next to him.

The rest of our friends eventually joined us.

"So, Hayden and Annie when did this happen? I never even saw you guys together?" Jayden asks.

"Yeah I always thought it'd be Hayden and Kenzie," Connor said making everyone laugh except me, Hayden, Brynn, and Johnny.

I locked eyes with Hayden and could feel them starting to burn. I felt John rest his hand on my leg trying to comfort me.

"Well I don't know what you guys were looking at, but I've had a crush on this girl forever. No one else compares." he said, making sure to look at me.

I could see Johnny's hand ball into a fist on the table. I looked up at him only to see him glaring at Hayden, but Hayden seemed surprised.

"You okay there Johnny?" Hayden asked with a hint of concern in his voice. Not for John, but for himself.

Johnny smacked his hands on the table to push himself up, causing everyone to jump. He grabbed his and my lunch bag and started walking out of the cafeteria.

Everyone looked at me. I shrugged before getting up and jogging after him.
