Mackenzie

I woke up to the sound of screaming.

Not just a scream, but more.  I knew exactly where it was coming from too.

And that made me want to stay in bed even more.  It belonged to my mother and father, they always screamed at each other.

Frankly, I don't know why they aren't divorced already.  I groaned and sat up to get ready for school.

But they usually don't argue till late at night, so today hurt worse than others.

I threw on jeans and a t shirt and brushed out my hair since it was naturally straight, then went downstairs.

I tiptoed past my parents sitting at the table, grabbed my backpack, and went out the door.

I walked down the driveway and opened the door to the car waiting outside my house.

"Hey," he smiled as I sat down in the passenger seat and closed the door.

"Hi."

"You good?" He asked me.

Johnny Orlando has been my best friend ever since we moved in down the street when I was 6 and he was 7.

He could tell if something was wrong even if I just said one word, and he always knew when I was lying.

He drives me to school everyday and we basically do everything together.

"Yeah, just more fighting," I sighed.

He nodded and continued driving, he knew I didn't like to talk about my parents.

When we got to school, he parked the car and we walked into the building.

We walked to our lockers, got our books, and went to class without speaking a word.

After 5th period, it was time for lunch.

I grabbed my lunch box and walked over to my usual table, and sat down in my seat next to Johnny.

Brynn, Annie, Carson, Hayden, Jayden, and Connor all sat with us.

When I sat down, I looked at my hands and stayed silent.  I couldn't stop thinking about this morning and my parents.

"So girls, everyone can come to my house before the big football game so we can get ready together!" Annie said.

"I'm in!" Jayden replied.

"Me too!" Brynn added.

"Kenzie?" Annie asked.

She snapped me out of my daze of thoughts and I picked my head up to look at her.

"What?" I asked.

"Tonight, my house.  Before the game."

"Oh yeah, okay," I replied looking back down at my hands.

"What-" I heard someone begin but I saw Johnny shake his head out of the corner of my eye, which cut them off.

"I'll be back," I said before standing up and walking out of the cafeteria.

I heard footsteps following me, but I didn't bother to look back.

I was about to go in the girls bathroom, when I felt a hand grab my arm and pull me back.

I turned to see Hayden, the boy who i've liked since middle school.

"Hey, why're you so upset?" he asked looking into my eyes.

"I don't wanna talk about it," I said looking down at my feet.

I felt his hand lift up my chin to look back up at him.

"Well just know, i'm always here for you." He said before pressing his lips against mine.

We pulled away and he walked back in the cafeteria, leaving me breathless.
