Jason's pov
I reluctantly walk out of her room. Sam was awake now and Miranda was waiting for me. I take a deep shaky breath. "What happened? Is Rachel okay?" I take her hands, hating what I'm about to say. "Baby, I'm so sorry. Rachel.... Rachel is dead." "N-No... She... She can't be." I hug her tight. "You're lying!" She yells. "I'm not lying honey!" She sets Sam down and runs to her room. "Mama!" Sam gasps. I pat her head.
*later*
"It can't be real." She whispers. "She can't be dead." I hold her in my arms sitting on the couch back home. "Why her?" "Baby think of it this way. She's happy. She has Mason again. You should've seen those two. I watched it all go down. They're so happy now honey." "She was my b-best friend." "I know." I whisper kissing her head. "She's in a better place."
*a few days later*
Miranda's pov
I clung to Sierra and Jason as they laid Rachel to rest. I was holding his hand so tight I think in was cutting off the circulation. "I feel so lost." I whisper sitting in his truck. He hugs me. "It's gonna get better. It may take time but it'll get better." The one thing I have to hold on that makes me smile a little is what Jason said. I lay my head on his shoulder, his arm around me. "Is she... Really with Mason?" He chuckles softly and nods. "They were so happy Miranda." "I just... I can't believe she's gone." "I know how you feel baby. It's just like when I got the news that my brother died saving my stupid ass." I sit up quickly. "You still blame yourself?!" I gasp shocked. He sighs. "It's true. He died saving me. If he woulda just stayed out like I told him-" "Then you wouldn't be here! Sam wouldn't be here!" "It doesn't change anything." He says, turning the key. "Let's go home." I can't believe after all these years he still blames himself. "I'll never see my little brother again." He whispers, turning onto the main highway to get home. I hold his hand worried. "I know it'll take a while for everything to feel normal, take all the time that ya need." He says smiling softly at me. I smile too. His eyes go wide and he jerks the wheel and hits the brakes. "JASON! MY GOD WHAT WAS THAT?!" I cry shocked. He glances behind us. Thankfully there weren't any cars coming. "Why'd you freak out?!" He's breathing fast. "Y-You didn't see that?" I shake my head. "Th-There was a g-guy!" "There wasn't anyone in the road!" I gape confused. He turns back, facing the front. "Shit!" He gasps. "What?" "I know why ya didn't see him!" "Why?!" "It musta been a ghost. I still haven't totally figured all this crud out." "I don't like this seeing ghosts stuff." I say worried about him. "I'm fine." He says, his voice shaky. We get back on the road, no more incidents on the way to his mom's house to pick up our daughter. "I'm not the only one who can see 'em." He murmurs, putting it in drive. "Who else can?" I ask worried. He looks in the rearview at our darling daughter. "Sam can too." "B-But how? She never had a near death experience like you!" "Little kids can see ghosts. But she'll grow out of it. Hopefully." He mumbles the last word. I sigh and close my eyes, exhausted. "What a day." I whisper sadly.
