Kara:

Kara woke the following morning without Ethan at her side. The clock on the night stand told her it was only seven thirty. It wasn’t like her to be up so early. Of course, in New York it was ten thirty which was a little more her speed.

As she recalled the time she and Ethan spent together last night, Kara smiled to herself. It was too bad it was already Saturday. They had only two nights left before they had to be at school on Monday.

Kara hopped from bed and headed for the bathroom. Her shower was even shorter than the ones she took at school but for different reasons. At school, she had to hurry through her shower so she didn’t run out of hot water or make herself late for her first class. Here, she just wanted to get in as much time with Ethan as she could, especially since she knew his parents wouldn’t be around until it got dark.

Sitting at the vanity, she applied a careful amount of make up and pulled her hair into a high ponytail.

“You look beautiful,” Ethan said from behind her.

“Jesus Christ, Drac!” she squealed, and he cracked up. “You scared the hell out of me.”

“No kidding.”

“You think that’s funny?”

“Maybe a little.”

“You won’t be laughing when I put you in your place.”

“What are you gonna do?”

“Maybe I’ll just order you not to scare me ever again.”

“What if scared you on accident? That wouldn’t be my fault you know.”

“That’s your problem. If I give you an order you have to obey it.”

“So what happens if I don’t?”

Kara had no idea. As his keeper, she knew she had the power to give him orders he was bound to obey. Still, it wasn’t something she did often. In fact, she’d only done it once in the three years she’d known him, and he’d obeyed. It hadn’t even occurred to her that he might not obey or what could happen if he didn’t.

“I don’t know,” she admitted. “What happens?”

“I can’t disobey you, Kara.”

“But what if you did?”

“I mean I can’t like it’s physically impossible. You have my key so my body would do whatever you ordered even if my mind didn’t want to.”

“Wow, that’s a lot of power.”

“Yeah, but it doesn’t bother me.”

“Why not?”

“Because I like it when you tell me what to do.”

“I’ll bet you do!”

“I liked it last night. You know, ‘Don’t stop, Dracula’.”

“Ethan!” Kara shrilled as tears filled her eyes.

“It was a joke.”

“It was mean, and it makes me feel stupid when you say it like that.”

“I didn’t mean to.”

“Then maybe you should think before you just blurt stuff out. You know how hard it is for me to say stuff like that, and you making fun of me isn’t going to make it any easier.”

“I wasn’t making fun of you,” Ethan said, and she frowned at him. “Okay, I was, but I wasn’t doing it to be mean.”

“You know, if that’s your idea of an apology it’s pretty crummy, almost as crummy as that marriage proposal,” she said, and he blushed in response. “Kind of sucks to be made fun of, huh?”
